Grace Jones' comeback album is to me the greatest thing that's happening on the musical scene 2008. There is simply no-one like Grace Jones, and after 19 years of sporadic recordings that have mostly been consistently good, I am very happy to have her back with such a strong album as Hurricane. The album opens with the sizzling, exciting "This Is", pounding and thundering along, before "Williams' Blood" (Keeping Up With the Joneses) which is a fabulous, haunting, self-biographic song, rising from the subtle verses to a gospel crescendo and a rousing, rocking guitar theme, chanting "I got the Williams' blood in me" and ending with Grace singing "Amazing Grace" with her mother ... simply… Read more

It is fitting that Ian Levine's very first recording way back in 1975 was called "Reaching For The Best" 'cause this brand new album - 33 years later - finds him doing just that. "Northern Soul 2008" is the fourth release on Levine's Centre City label and showcases 24 wonderful new tracks with a great selection of London's best soul singers. Rather than opening with Levine's trademark 100-miles-per-hour stomper, the album rather cleverly opens with a laid-back, jazzy-flavoured track "You Threw A Lucky Punch" with a sassy, bold vocal by Fay Jones.
