Burnt By The Sun [1994] [DVD] DVD ~ Nikita Mikhalkov
Burnt By The Sun [1994] [DVD] DVD ~ Nikita Mikhalkov
Ashamed to say I got restless and wondered where it was going in the first 20 minutes but it develops into an totally absorbing slowly unfolding tragedy that must have cause a sensation in Russia just a few years after the liberation of the Soviet Union. everything positive that's said about it here is true - the child actor is phenomenol - and I can't recommend it to highly.

An absorbing film about a poet I'd never heard of but what he was or is is not important in this entrancing piece of nostalgia, Inventive cinematically and with perfectly pitched understated performances. The subtitles don't cover everything that's said and in one 20 second patch (man talks to cat) they disappear altogether, but you could almost watch and understand this film without.

Got to say if I'd known what it was about I'd not have watched it as the main topic is a touchy one in my family ...........but the film is so expertly woven, back and forth in time, tragedy and wry comedy, so wholly realised that I checked the sleeve to see if it was based on a true story. Like all great films of course it is rooted in our complex reality and could be anybody's story. While it can't be said to have a simple happy ending it does have a satisfying plausible resolution - and the (almost) throwaway remark about the light from extinct stars has stayed with me as a thought. (A happy one).
