A scholarly but extremely interesting account of the life of one man in rural China during a period of radical transition. Fascinating.

This is a very good introduction to Japanese history and culture that covers all of Japanese history up to the end of the Tokugawa period. It was written in 1931 so is obviously dated in tone and attitude. It's extremely well written and, while containing some fairly broad generalisations about the Japanese spirit, manages the difficult task of covering two thousand years of history without being overly superficial. A good book if you want to grasp the essentials of pre-modern Japanese history in a single read.

At last, a popular maths book aimed at non-mathematicians that actually takes you through the maths step-by-step clearly and interestingly rather than just describing it in words. The historical context is also extremely interesting. Along with his other book 'Journey Through Genius: Great Theorems of Mathematics' can't recommend enough.
