Pointless to add much to the existing, and excellent, crits already posted, but, two moments of note:
1. Bernard Hill's face when the War Elephants arrive on Pelenor Fields - a masterpiece of "You're kidding me?!!??!?"
2. And his face when the Flying Nazgul arrive shortly afterwards - "You're taking the mick now!?!?!???!?"

4.0 out of 5 stars Well written polemic, 11 Aug 2004
Justifiably angry writing. Mr Cohen chooses his targets carefully and does a thorough job explaining how and why they are the target of his scorn.
Generally better written than Michael Moore's books, with fewer unsubstanitated "2 + 2 = 5" deductions.
This book gives much food for thought about "knee-jerk" opinions. I thoroughly recommend it

I enjoyed the general thrust of the book, a series of essays on various aspects of modern (in the mid 1950's)life. But I have a problem with either the writing or translation, the word "Antiphrastically" appeared too many times than is sensible or natural in any written work.
Either M. Barthes is insanely pretentious, or his translator is. I consider myself a reasonably intelligent reader, and I had my dictionary out at least once an essay to decipher what he'd said. Bad writing, in essence, makes for hard reading.
