With such a stellar cast I expected more than the film actually delivered.

The acting was good, characterisation was good but the script didn't quite deliver the goods. I'm not sure why? The plot and idea was great. Maybe it was that the characters didn't really gel or the dialogue failed to convince me.

It certainly wasn't up to some of it's peer films such as Shirley Valentine and Educating Rita

But worth a view.

This is a very specific genre film and if you're a big fan of (1930s- 50s) traditional US country music then the film really hits the mark.

But don't expect anything normal!

It turns out that the police are involved and the uncle, who has been put in charge of the case, goes out on a limb and breaches procedure to protect Amelia. From there the action spirals as the families are slowly drawn in to the drama, and danger.

Gina McKee is splendid as Amelia, no cheesy sentimental characterisation, but gritty realism - a typical teenager… Read more
