The Returned - Series 1 [DVD] DVD ~ Anne Consigny
The Returned - Series 1 [DVD] DVD ~ Anne Consigny
The series starts really well, with a family’s daughter returning home three years after her death! She is totally unaware that anything is amiss and the reaction of her family upon her appearance is entirely believable and not cheesy.

Then it transpires she is not the only one who is returning. For several episodes it generates tension and mystery with excellent acting, characterisation and a promising plot. By episode five a number of elements are introduced for which I assumed an explanation would be tied up by the closing episode. Wolf: Jack Caffery series 7 by Mo Hayder
I eagerly await each new novel by Mo Hayder, especially the Jack Caffery series.

And, for the first half to two thirds of this book I savoured each page. But then, it slowly seemed to shed reality, and the plot became too clever for its own good. The hostage situation began full of tension but slowly meandered towards tedium. The relationship with the 'walking man' was even more esoteric tha usual.

By the end of the book, I found myself skipping pages - always a bad sign!

For me, coincidence played far too big a part. Full marks though Mo Hayder's research, (as usual). But I'll still look forward to the next publication!

The main character is Joe Carter, an ex British police undercover officer who was exposed and declined a witness protection programme, instead becoming a low profile drifter.

It's a sort of Britain's answer to America's Jack Reacher. Both characters by British authors and both very easy reads, fast and pure escapism. This is the sort of novel for reading on holiday or airports where there isn't too much concentration needed. having read 'Skin and Bones' which I enjoyed I was delighted to find that this book was up to the same standard.

In this story, Joe is employed as a body guard to a Russian oligarch's family but from the start all is not as it seems. The story… Read more
