It would be easy to lazily categorize this book as horror or fantasy, but at it's core it is a human drama about how friendships are stretched and yet still bind us across the years. Just as importantly it's a real page turner that will keep making you say "OK, one more chapter and then I'll put it down".

Most films are defined by what they are. Avatar is over-long, over-blown nonsense with some pretty spectacular 3D set pieces. Toy Story is ludicrously engaging for a tale of action figures. The Wild Bunch is the nihilistic death rattle of the western whilst Hostel is just plain nasty. Normally when you start talking about what a film lacks, you are pointing out what is wrong with it. the Transformers films lack stories or characters to flesh out the pulverising CGI. Cars lacks the emotional credibility that typifies the rest of Pixars work. What is best about The Losers is what it isn't.

A touch over 10 years ago Jason Statham was finishing a career as a member of the British Diving Team and doing occasional modelling work for French Connection. Now he is such an established star that the words "a Jason Statham film" tell you everything you need to know about a movie. You could put him into any situation and it would mould itself to him a tight fitting pair of speedos. Cast him as a mechanic and can already hear telling customers in his trademark growl "that's going to cost you". He'd strip off his shirt to wrench bolts tight and accidentally get some oil on himself. Throw in a fight with a local gang attempting to trash the joint and you are pretty much there… Read more
