The two chunky volumes which comprise "The Complete Mapp and Lucia" are a must for my desert island.
They contain the six novels of the series, and lengthy forewords by Keith Carabine, which at a superficial glance might lead you to suppose that the work of Fred Benson is obscure, and needs explanation. Of course it doesn't - the jokes, though elaborate in execution are simple in concept, and expressed with the felicity of Jane Austen and the aplomb of P G Wodehouse.
Indeed, Carabine self-effacingly, and wisely advises the reader to read the books first and then look at his notes.
