We have James Joyce to thank for this astounding book; the Italian literati ignored it at the time. It is one of those rarities: a truly major work that is also a tremendously good laugh. Zeno tells the story of his life through a diary which his psychiatrist has amde him keep. (He lets dthe psychiatrist down and is disowned by him.) But it is not a sequential, time-based, narrative. Zeno goes off in extraordinary directions. A large section, for example, concerns his heroic and many attempts to stop smoking - anyone who has been a smoker will know hoe true his account is. He tries to set up a business with a friend - it fails; his partner tries to gamble on the Bourse - it fails… Read more

How many people knew that hundreds of national servicemen, in the 50s, were taught Russian, so that we could understand the Soviet troops if ever we went to war with them? And that the navy, the smallest service, should provide a disproportionate number of these linguists? it seems so qixotic now, but it really did happen. This book, then, tells this bizarre story, together with all the (many) pitfalls, pratfalls, comedy disasters etc one might expect. It is not just a trip down memory lane for a bunch of 75-year-olds; it deserves a much wider audience. a thrilling thriller, offering the reader the same hidden hints (and deadends) as le carre, but not vitiated by le carre's "clever" plot- and time inversions. my kindle version was, like other kindle offerings, quite carelessly proofread, which is irritating.
