Mawson: A Life (Miegunyah Press) by Philip Ayres
5.0 out of 5 stars A very revealing read, 7 Jun 2009
Having read other books on early antarctic exploration, I find this one gives a very detailed insight into the nature of getting an expedition together, co-ordinating the funds, the crew and the work. Ayres has researched thoroughly and widely and sourced the diaries of Mawson's crew and supporters. It reveals individual struggle, anguish and character needed for such a life. A very good and enlightening read about Mawson and his life but also about his relationship with his men, his funders and with Shackleton.

I found this book very useful in that it explains the processes involved and in great detail helping you understand what is happening on your wall. The illustrated techniques are also useful although don't replace good quality training. Some tools and techniques photos are not great. The range of plasters and renders covered is excellent and gives you lots of ideas. Overall, a great reference book that will help you one your way even if only to understand the language, tools and techniques enough to employ a contractor doing this type of work.
