This book is brilliant and unusual in more ways than it is possible to fit into one review. One of the most special things about it is that it is a beautifully crafted, literary novel, a 'proper' book, which is also an unputdownable page-turner. Other reviewers have outlined the action and themes, so I won't duplicate, except to say that this book is about many things, but the theme that I found most fascinating was that of unresolved trauma and the way this can be passed down through generations. It is not often that you find such a captivating, moving book; I could hardly bear to finish it.
