In My Own Words:
Linguist, translator, artist, writer, anime-freak and metal-head. I love many kinds of "alternative" music, in particular doom and symphonic metal, some death and black metal (although I tend to find these genres a little clicheed) and anything classically-influenced. I also love to read, mainly culturally influenced texts, often in translation although I should make more effort to read the orig… Read more

The Manticore And Other Horrors (Standard Edition) ~ Cradle Of Filth
You could be forgiven for thinking that after 20 years in the business, Cradle might have seen better days. I certainly thought so. After a decade of spreading infectious darkness, accompanied by lashings of OTT gothic, they had set off down a harder, more simplistic and ultimately rather more pedestrian road. Nymphetamine was bad, Thornography was worse... Yes, they pulled their socks up a little with some decent pieces on Godspeed, and even more so with the darkly erotic Venus Aversa, but in many ways they had abandoned the principles of evil that once made them so fantastic.

Doom metal is something of an acquired taste. The slowest, darkest and most gloomy form of metal is not for everyone. But for those who do enjoy the odd foray into the world of doomed lovers, despair and slow death, My Dying Bride are the undisputed kings of the genre. In fact, they are one of the very few bands who are not only sticking to the 20-odd year old doom recipe, but consistently producing the highest possible quality.

True, it's been years since their classic masterpieces were released, but they've come full circle and come back to their classic English doom roots. No gimmicks, no respite, just an hour of solid darkness and perfectly-formed melancholy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Weather Systems, 17 Jun 2012
A few days ago I decided to splash out an get myself the new Anathema album, Weather Systems. So far, I have mixed feelings about this album. I've loved Anathema all the way along, through their many evolutions in style, and I have to admit that they have finally found their own, true sound over the last couple of albums, especially the two most recent. Anathema have truly become Anathema, playing music that is true to themselves and that reflects the music they want to make and the ideas they want to express. That's really nice to see, and they've carved out their own little niche as a band that mixes a lot of acoustic sounds with rock and progressive elements, atmospheric melodies and… Read more
