I'm a Malazan addict,BUT!
Having read this book, Stoneweilder and Return of Crimson Guard, I am finally going to give up on ICE. He is simply not a storyteller. He lacks Eriksons prose, humour and plot building. One example is when Shadowthrone and cotillion put in an appearance. Erickson has made these two among my favorite characters, he writes them with pathos and great humour, whilst they are cardboard cutouts in this novel. I'm surprised that Erikson allows his close friend to ruin their joint project. ICE who undoubtably is a talented man however is not a novelist. So despite the fact it means I'll have to wait longer for my next dose of Malazan, I'd rather do that than suffer… Read more
Forge of Darkness: The Kharkanas Trilogy 1 by Steven Erikson
5.0 out of 5 stars best so far, 19 Oct 2012
I am an avid reader of this author. I have read the whole fallen series twice and some of the novels 3 times. In my opinion this latest venture is Erikson's best. It's great to get the history of some of my favorite characters. As previous reviewers have remarked, some of the philosophy by otherwise bankrupt POV's is unlikely, however I accept it as the authors thoughts and they are often enlightening. Just as an aside, has there ever been a greater character than Anomander Rake in fantasy literature? And what a glorious name!

I have just finished The Crippled God for the second time and have read all the books twice. A Whiteheads great review mentions nearly all the comments I'd like to make, so I won't repeat them. I found this series totally engrossing. The scope of the authors imagination is mind-numbing and puts me off ever trying to write a novel myself as I could never achieve anything like this tour de force. I found myself moved to tears so many times during the series that my wife thought I was reading a romantic novel. Some of the characters are the most well drawn and charismatic I have ever encountered in fiction.
If you havn't read this series I urge you to do so, its hard work at first but… Read more
