Love this story, it builds tension and atmosphere slowly and allows the reader to get to know each character. Not quite Rebecca but certainly a brilliant book. However, considering the central female protagonist was so strong and firm minded throughout, its s shame she ends up giving up her resolve to live in her home town for a man who for some reason insists on living a crappy life further north where she will never find peace or comfort, as he describes.....

I was looking forward to this book after Neville's last terrible offering (House of small shadows) and hoped he would redeem himself and return to form last seen in Last Days, alas, it wasn't to be. This book is bizarrely written in the present tense eg. 'Dante walks over to the cupboard', instead of 'Dante walked over to the cupboard' - makes for a weird reading experience and I'm unsure why Neville chose to do this. The story's premise is excellent and as a night terror sufferer myself I couldn't wait to read a story weaved around them. The plot itself turned out to be very boring, clunky and did not deliver.
