Besides the stunning visual effects and they are truly stunning, I was touched by the story itself. The story is ultimately about love, loss and finding the strength to live again. Sandra Bullock's character Dr Ryan Stone is grieving the death of her daughter who died tragically bumping her head whilst playing tag at school. Going into space for Dr Stone serves as a metaphor for drifting into the void of grief and becoming disengaged from the world. Through the inspirational words of Matt Kowalski played by George Clooney, Dr Stone begins her battle to survive against the odds and find her way back into the world again.

I work as a psychiatric nurse on a intensive care ward and have often been in the centre of power struggles between psychologists and psychiatrists. From my experience, Psychologists seem to believe in the ubiquitous efficacy of dialectical/cognitive behaviour therapy as a treatment for severe mental illness. For example, mindfulness meditation as a treatment option for Bipolar Affective Disorder. Psychiatrists spend 10 minutes a week with patients and take a medical model approach eg, assessment, diagnosis and treatment. However in fairness, psychologists spend even less time with inpatients.

I think a person who is able to survive the appalling horrors of auschwitz and remain mentally intact has something very important to say about life and the mind. We are so lucky to have this book and to have the views of such a fantastic man. Viktor Frankl is my hero and I feel my life is better because of him.
