I don't usually give 3 stars in my reviews as I feel like it's sitting on the fence!
However, this book has really left me undecided.
A very clever idea, some lovely prose and lots of really nice set pieces made me persevere to the bitter end with this story. The author's references to magical events and 'history' are written so matter of factly that they lend a great deal of verisimilitude to the tone of the plot, which I really liked. I also love Regency novels, so that definitely helped too.
However, as pointed out by other reviewers, the constant need to refer to multitudinous footnotes, really slows down the pace. It is a huge tome of a book, but this took me waaaay… Read more
