5.0 out of 5 stars In one word: magical!, 20 Jan 2014
Mirrormask is a movie that I absolutely adore despite the fact that, as a 38 year-old male, I'm most certainly not the target demographic they had in mind when they made it.

Nevertheless, the magical tale of an adolescent girl coping with living a life she doesn't know if she wants and with her mother's illness captivated me. It reminds me of both "Labyrinth" and "Neverwhere", yet it's neither as childish as the former nor as dark as the latter. Mirrormask, for me at least, also conveyed more emotions than either of those (no offense, I still love those two).

I don't give 5 stars lightly, so believe me when I say that this is a hidden gem.

Bioshock Infinite is a game of two halves. On the one hand, you have the storytelling and on the other, the gameplay. And they're almost polar opposites.

The ingenious plot concerns itself with themes such as redemption, racism, religion, choices and consequences, quantum physics, robbed childhoods and more. And it's all done very well. But it's not. It's a game. And that's where it all comes crashing down. The previous "shock" games had a a measure of exploration and roaming to them as well as… Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointingly mediocre., 29 April 2013
Let me preface this by saying that I did not read the novels.

Wit that out of the way, I found The Hunger Games to be a slow-paced and shallow movie. It takes an hour to get going but even the second act is quite boring.

It's an amalgamation of Battle Royale and The Running Man, with little original thought added in. Unfortunately, where those movies embraced their over the top nature, Hunger Games tries to be serious about but doesn't go all the way with that either.

When you put characters in such an extreme situation, you would have ample opportunity to explore equally extreme moral choices, yet those completely pass the protagonist by. You would expect… Read more
