I find it hard to believe that anyone, even the people who've given this 5 stars would find this 'hilarious'. That's not to say that there aren't funny parts to it - there are, it's just that they tend to be smile-inwardly-amusing that laugh-out-loud funny.

The basic story, as told by a cynic, is this: a middle-aged male writer spends time away from his wife but has trouble writing. He meets a younger woman who teaches him about himself, helps him to write and in the bargain he finds out that said girl is deep and troubled.

Why not have cast Woody Allen instead of Jeff Daniels, right?

It'd be fair to say that I don't particularly care for the storyline -… Read more

I wouldn't have watched this except that I read a misleading review mentioning that this exposes the trope of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl (which also mentioned 'Eternal Sunshine...' which I love). It's funny enough in several places and I'm sure fans of Family Guy will love it. Mark Wahlberg does a great job at projecting and reacting to a character that's not actually there (a very hard thing to do and easily overlooked). And the CGI is top-notch and makes Ted into a full, expressive creature.

However, the problems with it are:
a) there's really no story there beyond the jokes and what little there is is a rip-off of Garfield and any number of rom-coms
b) like so much of MacFarlane's work, there is a lot of underlying misogyny
c) some of the cameos works brilliantly but others fall absolutely flat
d) while some people may defend some of the jokes as… Read more
