I am a fixed income strategist at a major global investment bank, and I cannot recommend this book more highly. The scope and ambition of this book is deliberately modest (focussing primarily on bond mathematics and swaps, leaving out the rest of the fixed income universe), but outcome is great. Smith gets into the nitty gritty of bond mathematics which most market practitioners probably don't know (and most fixed income books skip), and usefully links this with screenshots from Bloomberg to match the theory with reality. This is a great little reference book to have.

As a fixed income strategist at a major global investment bank, I've been searching the globe for a practitioner-oriented book which doesn't skimp on technical detail for a very long time.

Schofield's and Bowler's attempt is admirable: their aim is clearly to deliver the type of book which has genuine practical use (most attempts at this by academics who have never stepped foot in a trading floor usually end in disappointment) with the necessary technical muscle to make it truly useful.

I used this book on a recent trip to Istanbul. It's not perfect -- no book is -- but if you are going to carry one, reasonably compact, guidebook, then this would be a good choice. Its main weakness is on shops and shopping, but otherwise, I found it quite useful.
