MADRI (Italian Edition) by Maria Grazia Giordano Paperi
MADRI (Italian Edition) by Maria Grazia Giordano Paperi
I knew the author many years ago in Oxford, and was delighted to read this sad, eloquent and gripping compendium of women's voices. There is a darker side to motherhood, that traditional Italian culture (with its Madonna/ whore dichotomy) does not always give expression to, and here it is given full rein, in the poetry of real mothers' voices.

This book brings the pre-www era to life, complete with letter-writing, phone calls, cross-country travel on the off-chance, avid news-gathering on the grapevine... It is also the story of how pop music helps us form our adolescent identity, and how a pop star can turn out to be a really nice person. Knowing the author went on to run Toyah's fan club, I was left intrigued to know what happened next.

This is an unusual science fiction-type work, with a fascinating premise and quirky, very human, execution. It has enthralled me since I first read it aged 14, and I have re-read it several times over the last 20 years.
