The Help by Kathryn Stockett
The Help by Kathryn Stockett
The Help is so superbly written that it's hard to believe it's a debut novel. Stockett has created three utterly distinct, utterly compelling voices for her three protagonists. Aibileen, Minny, and Skeeter are so well realised that at times I forgot I was reading fiction. This is the best example of a work incorporating several first-person passages I have ever read; the book moves from narrator to narrator without once jarring the reader. Somehow, Stockett even works in a chapter in the third person entirely seamlessly. All the characters are believable, even those who appear only for a few paragraphs.

I realise that people are going to be queing up to click the "unhelpful" box after I write this review, but I'm going to say what I want to say anyway.

I'm not going to say that RavenWolf Witches aren't Wiccan; I'm not going to say that my beliefs are more valid than hers; I'm not going to pick out every detail I don't like (which would take forever) and bore you to death about it. I am going to say that in this massive book I didn't find a single thing which I found helpful. RavenWolf herself tells you not to follow anything you're uncomfortable with, and boy, does this make me uncomfortable.

I'm not going to tell you not to buy a book by her if you want to, but fot… Read more
