1) Does it connect to ANY wi-fi network i.e. down the pub or cafe or on the bus or wherever?
Yes - something wrong with your wi-fi
No - Something wrong with your Kindle.

Yes (2) Make sure your router is on channel 6-11 / B&G only. Disconnect ALL cables from the wifi and leave it totally unplugged to anything for at least 2 minutes.
Make sure all other wifi devices are turned off (i.e. other kindle / pcs / smart tvs)
Turn on Kindle - can it see a selection of wifi connections?
Yes /No
Yes - see if you can now see your router
if yes, select FORGET and then RESCAN.
You should now be connected and can now conenct everything else to the router again (NOTE - Some routers can only cope with 5/6 connections. 2 kindles, a couple of pcs, a laptop, a tablet and a smartphone is possibly 2 too many devices for your router.

no - On the kindle turn AEROPLANE MODE ON (turn wifi off) Now do a soft reset by holding the power button in the ON position for a slow count of 33. Keep pressing, holding and counting slowly.

no - On the Kindle turn AEROPLANE MODE ON (turn wifi off) Now do a FULL RESTORE TO FACTORY DEFAULT SETTINGS.
now reconnect to wifi
Now reconnect to amazon.

It looks quite pretty on a Flow chart - it looks a bit messy just in text.

Good luck
