After you register your Kindle Fire HD and set up your 1-Click payment method, you can start using your Kindle Fire HD.

Navigate the Home Screen

There are several quick ways to navigate the Home screen on your Kindle Fire HD 7".

  • Home, tap the Menu icon to go to the Home screen from anywhere on your Kindle.
  • Content Libraries - The Home screen on your Kindle Fire contains content libraries where you'll access your books, games, videos and other content. Tap a library to open it.
  • Carousel - The Carousel holds your most recently used books, videos, music, apps and more. To remove an item from the Carousel, press and hold, and then tap Remove from Carousel.
  • Settings - Swipe down from the top of the screen to show Quick Settings to manage Wi-Fi, brightness, and other settings.
  • Search - In the Search bar at the top of the screen, type search words, and then tap Libraries, Stores or Web to search for your items, shop for items, or search the web.
  • Favourites - Tap the Favourites icon from Home to view apps and content you've marked as your favourites. To mark your content as a favourite, press and hold the item, and then tap.

Turn Accessibility Features On or Off

With accessibility features, you can navigate your Kindle Fire HD with special gestures and hear spoken feedback about the items you touch and open..

Note: Accessibility features are supported for navigation and for reading books only. Voice Guide and Explore by Touch accessibility features are available in English only.

  1. To turn on accessibility features:
    1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to show Quick Settings, and then tap More.
    2. Tap Accessibility.
    3. Select your accessibility options:

    Voice Guide

    Reads aloud details about the selections you make onscreen (for example, the title and summary of a book)

    Explore by Touch

    Allows you to use special gestures to navigate your Kindle Fire:

    • Drag one finger: Hear selections being spoken on the screen.
    • Double-tap: Download or open an item and make menu selections.
    • Swipe up or down with two fingers: Scroll through items in the carousel and content libraries, or in a list or pages.
    • Swipe down with two fingers from Home: Open the Quick Settings menu.
    • Swipe right or left with two fingers: Go to the next or previous screen or page.
    • Swipe right to left from the lockscreen: Open the lock screen.

  2. To turn off accessibility features:
    1. Swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers to open Quick Settings.

      Tip: If you’re on the lock screen, place two fingers on the screen, swipe to the left, and then open Quick Settings.

    2. Tap More, and then double-tap the screen to open the Settings menu.
    3. Tap Accessibility, and then double-tap the screen to open the Accessibility menu
    4. Next to Voice Guide, tap Off, and then double-tap the screen to confirm your selection. When the Voice Guide is disabled, Explore by Touch is turned off automatically.

Change the Device Language

Set your default device language to one of the following ten languages: English (U.S.), English (U.K.), English (Canada), German, French (France), French (Canada), Italian, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Japanese, and Chinese (Simplified).

When you select a new language, the device menus, keyboard, and default dictionary will be changed; the User Guide and any content downloaded to your Kindle Fire will remain the same.

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to show Quick Settings, and then tap More.
  2. Tap Language & Keyboard, and then tap Language.

Set Up the Keyboard

Change how the onscreen keyboard for your Kindle Fire HD 7" operates with special features like auto-correction, next word prediction, and different keyboard languages.

  1. From Home, swipe down from the top of the screen to show Quick Settings, and then tap More.
  2. Tap Language & Keyboard, and then tap Keyboard.
    • Tap Keyboard to change your default keyboard language to one of eleven pre-selected languages: English (Canada), English (United Kingdom), English (United States), French, French (Canada), German, Italian, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), Spanish, and Portuguese (Brazil).
    • Tap Keyboard Settings to change settings for: sound on key press, auto-correction, auto-capitalization, next word prediction, and personal dictionary.
    • Tap Download Keyboard Languages to download additional keyboard languages for your Kindle Fire. To download a keyboard language, press and hold the keyboard you want to download. To delete a keyboard language, tap the keyboard language you want to delete, and then tap Yes.

      Note: If you're downloading a keyboard language for the first time, you will need to accept the Swype Terms of Service before you can download the keyboard.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Use keyboard shortcuts on your Kindle Fire to compose a message, search for items on your device, and more. With Swype, you can enter a word by drawing through letters. Swype can't be turned off, but you can continue to use the keyboard normally on your Kindle Fire.

  • Replace a word - Tap the word, and then select the word you want from the word list directly above the keyboard.
  • Bring up alternate characters - Press and hold a letter, and then tap your selection.
  • Enter a word - Tap letters on the keyboard to enter a word. Alternatively, place your finger on the first letter of the word you want to enter, and then draw a path from letter to letter.
  • Switch keyboard to display numbers and symbols - Press the ?123 key.
  • Switch keyboard to display letters - Press the ABC key.
  • Select keyboard language - Press and hold the Space key, and then select your preferred language from the menu.
  • Capitalise letters - Tap the Shift (up arrow) key once to enter an uppercase letter. For Caps Lock, double-tap the Shift (up arrow) key. Alternatively, while touching the first letter of a word, swipe straight upward off the edge of the keyboard, and then without lifting your finger, swipe to the next letter.
  • Cut, copy, paste, select all, select text, enter, or use arrows to move the typing cursor - Press and hold the ?123 key with the small scissors icon.
  • Select all - Swipe from ?123 to a.
  • Copy - Swipe from ?123 to c.
  • Cut - Swipe from ?123 to x.
  • Paste - Swipe from ?123 to v.
  • Insert a period and a space (at the end of a sentence) - Swipe from . to Space bar.
  • Bring up the Number keypad - Swipe from ?123 to t.
  • Hide the keyboard - Swipe from ?123 to Delete. Alternatively, press the Back arrow in the Options Bar.
  • Type "www" - Swipe from w to . .
  • Capitalise the first letter of a word - While touching the first letter, swipe straight upward off the edge of the keyboard, and then without lifting your finger, swipe to the next letter.
  • Change the case of a word - Tap the word. Swipe up from the ?123 key to the Shift (up arrow) key, and then select the word you want from the word list directly above the keyboard.
