Previous software version

Make sure you have the latest software version for your device. To learn more, go to Fire and Kindle Software Updates and select your device to find the latest software update.

Download in progress

If you are currently downloading content on your device, it may be slow to respond until all downloads are complete. It may also be slow immediately after downloading a large amount of content.

Device temperature

Avoid using your device in extreme hot or cold temperature conditions.

Device accessories

If you have a protective case or screen, try removing it and testing the device without it.

Touchscreen is dirty

Clean the screen with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth.

Avoid using the device while wearing gloves, with wet hands, or immediately after applying hand lotion.

Multiple Kindle Fire apps running

If you have multiple apps running on your Fire tablet, quit unused apps.

Restart needed

Restarting your device involves turning it off completely and then turning it back on again.

Restart your Kindle from the Power dialog or Settings menu:

  • Fire tablets: Press and hold the power button for two to three seconds until you see the message "Do you want to shut down your Kindle?" appear, and then tap Shut Down. After the device has completely turned off, press the power button to restart your Fire.
  • eReaders: From Home, select the Menu icon, and then select Settings. From Settings, select the Menu icon again, and then select Restart device.

Low battery

If your device battery is low, charge your device for at least 30 minutes, and then try restarting again

Reset needed

If you continue to experience slowness after restarting your device, try resetting your device by selecting Reset Device from the Settings menu.

Important: Resetting your device will remove your personal information (including your settings for Parental Controls), Amazon account information, and any downloaded content. Any content you purchased from Amazon is automatically saved to the Cloud and can be downloaded again when you register your Fire or Kindle to your account again.
