Kindle Personal Documents Service

Kindle Personal Documents service makes it easy to take your personal documents with you; eliminating the need to print. With Kindle's Personal Document Service, you and your approved contacts can send personal documents wirelessly to your Kindle, archive them in your Kindle library and download them any time you have a wireless connection. Just as with Kindle books, Whispersync automatically synchronizes your last page read, bookmarks, and annotations for personal documents (with the exception of PDFs) across your supported devices.

You can view and download archived personal documents from your Kindle library on Kindle, Kindle Keyboard (with the latest software update, version 3.3), Kindle for Android (running app version 3.5 or greater) and Kindle for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch (running Kindle app version 2.9 or greater). The Kindle personal document service is not currently supported on other free Kindle Reading Applications. Whispersync of last page read, bookmarks and annotations is available on your archived personal documents that have been converted into Kindle format.

Sending Personal Documents to Kindle Devices

You and your approved contacts can send a personal document to your supported devices by e-mailing it to your Send-to-Kindle e-mail address. You must ensure that:

  • You have approved the sender's e-mail address. Learn More.
  • You gave the sender your Send-to-Kindle e-mail address. Learn More.
  • Your personal document is a supported file type. Learn More.

Once you have confirmed the above, you can send your personal documents wirelessly to your Kindle via e-mail (e.g. [name]@kindle.com) as follows:

  1. Attach your document to a new e-mail or forward an existing e-mail that has a document attached. A subject is not necessary in the e-mail. If your document is a PDF and you want to convert PDF to the Kindle format then simply add "convert" in the subject line of the e-mail.
  2. Send the e-mail to your Send-to-Kindle e-mail address for wireless delivery directly to your supported device.
  3. Personal documents in supported file formats smaller than 5 MB are typically delivered to your supported device, within five minutes (per document) if your device's wireless is connected. Personal documents larger than 5 MB may take longer. Personal documents in some file formats (such as PDF files) may take longer.
  4. Your e-mail provider may have additional limitations on file size.

Keep in Mind:

  • The file size of each attached personal document must be 50MB or less (before compression in a ZIP file).
  • The submitted e-mail must contain no more than 25 attached personal documents.
  • The submitted e-mail must target less than 15 distinct Send-to-Kindle e-mail addresses.
  • The attached personal document must be a supported file type. Learn More
  • If you choose to archive your documents, then your documents will continue to be stored in your Kindle library until you delete them from Manage Your Kindle.
  • If you choose to not archive your documents and your supported device is not connected wirelessly, we store your document for 60 days and attempt to deliver to your device once it restores wireless connectivity. Personal documents not delivered within this time period will be deleted.

Kindle Personal Documents Service Fees

Kindle Personal Documents Service doesn't charge fees for delivery of personal documents to Kindle devices over Wi-Fi or to supported Kindle reading applications.

Fees for the Kindle Personal Documents Service via Whispernet are based on the size of the file submitted (before compression if you use a .zip file), your country, and where you're accessing Whispernet. Personal documents service fees will only be charged for documents that are successfully delivered to your Kindle device via Whispernet. Personal documents service fees are rounded up to the next whole MB and apply to each personal document delivered via Whispernet to each Kindle device. If you transfer personal documents to your Kindle via Whispernet, the fee is £0.20 per MB.

Note: You can also send your personal documents via e-mail as attachments to [name]@free.kindle.com. To have a document converted to Kindle format (.azw), the subject line should be "convert." Kindle Personal Documents Service will attempt to deliver your personal documents to your Kindle device via Wi-Fi when connected, and to the e-mail address associated with the Amazon account to which the device is registered. You can use the e-mail to download the file to your computer and transfer it to your Kindle device using a USB connection.

Aggregation of fees for Kindle Personal Documents Service

If you send multiple documents for conversion, consecutive orders that cost less than £5.00 may be combined into one transaction and appear as a single charge.

Setting your personal documents charge limit

You can set the maximum charge allowed for a single personal document sent wirelessly to your Kindle device through Manage Your Kindle. Any personal document you sent that exceeds this charge will be stored in your Kindle Library if Personal Document Archiving settings are enabled in Manage Your Kindle.

To set the charge limit for Kindle Personal Documents Service:

  1. Visit Manage Your Kindle.
  2. Select Personal Document Settings from the left hand menu.
  3. Scroll down to the heading "Whispernet Delivery Options."
  4. Select "Edit" on the right hand side of the page.
  5. Enter your preferred personal document charge limit.
  6. Click "Update."
The limit you set is a per document limit. If you send multiple documents for conversion in a .zip file, the total aggregated charge for conversion of all the documents may exceed your per document limit. As long as each document's charge is below the limit, conversion and delivery will be successful.

Whispersync Settings

You can create bookmarks and annotations on your personal documents. Just as with Kindle books, Whispersync automatically synchronizes your last page read, bookmarks and annotations for personal documents (with the exception of PDFs) across the devices.

Whispersync of bookmarks, annotations and your last page read is available on your archived personal documents that have been converted into Kindle format. Files transferred via USB and PDF's not converted into Kindle format do not support these features. Whispersync of personal documents is currently supported on Kindle, Kindle Keyboard (with software version 3.3), Kindle for Android (running app version 3.5 or greater) and Kindle for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch with version 2.9 or greater.

Supported File Types

Kindle personal document service supports multiple file types including:

  • Microsoft Word (.DOC, .DOCX)
  • HTML (.HTML, .HTM)
  • RTF (.RTF)
  • JPEG (.JPEG, .JPG)
  • Kindle Format (.MOBI, .AZW)
  • GIF (.GIF)
  • PNG (.PNG)
  • BMP (.BMP)
  • PDF (.PDF); is supported in our experimental category. See below for details.

The above file types can also be combined in a compressed ZIP (.ZIP) file. ZIP files are automatically opened up by the conversion service, converted to the Kindle format if needed, and sent to your Kindle and stored in your Kindle library. Some complex PDF files might not format correctly on your Kindle. If you prefer to have your personal PDF documents converted to the Kindle format so you can take advantage of Kindle functionality such as variable font size, annotation, Text-to-Speech, etc., type "Convert" in the subject of the e-mail when you submit your personal document to your Send-to-Kindle e-mail address.
