UltraViolet

An UltraViolet copy is sometimes included with the purchase of a DVD or Blu-ray and allows for access to the film or TV show to be added to a cloud-based digital collection. A unique authentication code is included with your DVD or Blu-ray purchase to enable the title to be added to your UltraViolet collection. Once added, you can then download the file onto your computer or portable media player or stream the content directly to enabled devices.

The authentication code has an expiration date rendering the copy invalid if unused before this time. The exact use and availability of UltraViolet copy varies by title, and it depends which studio is releasing the title. There should be a paper insert inside the case of DVD or Blu-ray that includes UltraViolet copy information and this will outline the different elements of the copy.

Access to your UltraViolet collection requires registering with the UltraViolet website and will also require registration on the relevant studio's UltraViolet service. Playback of UltraViolet content on your computer or portable media player may require the download of an UltraViolet-enabled application.

How does UltraViolet work?

Every time you buy an UltraViolet-enabled film or TV show, you can add a digital "proof of purchase" to your UltraViolet collection. By doing this, UltraViolet retailers, streaming services, and UltraViolet-capable devices and apps can confirm your rights to the film or TV show and enable you to watch.

What are UltraViolet Rights?

UltraViolet Rights are the guaranteed minimum benefits that you, as a consumer, get with every UltraViolet film or TV show at-no-charge above the original purchase price. These Rights allow you to access your purchased film and TV content across a range of devices and applications.

How do I create a new UltraViolet account?

You can open your UltraViolet Account at the official UltraViolet website. Once your UltraViolet account is set up, you will need to register with film or TV studio's websites or applications to add films or TV shows to your UltraViolet collection.

How do I add new purchases to my UltraViolet collection?

Your title will come with in-package instructions on how/where you can log in (or create an account) to add it to your collection. Different film and TV studios will require you to access different websites or applications in order to add their titles to your collection. Unlike other digital copies, you do not need to have a physical disc present to add your title to your collection or to download it to your device.

What titles can I add to my UltraViolet collection?

All titles that have the option of UltraViolet copy will have "+ UV Copy" listed in the title. Warner Home Video, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Universal Pictures UK and Paramount Home Entertainment are all releasing some titles with UV copies. Each of these studios will direct you to their own UltraViolet service to start the process of adding your title to your collection. Details of these sites will be included on the in-package instructions that come with your DVD or Blu-ray purchase.

Does it cost anything to set up and manage my UltraViolet account?

No, your UltraViolet account and collection is included free with your UltraViolet film and TV show purchases.

Can I merge two separate UltraViolet accounts?

UltraViolet doesn't currently support merging (or separating) of accounts. This is a planned feature for a future version of UltraViolet.

How many people can share my UltraViolet account?

You may share your UltraViolet account with up to five other people (account members), and each member can have their own username/password log-in information.

Are there Parental Controls?

Yes, UltraViolet offers parental controls to restrict or prevent child members from accessing certain titles (or even seeing them listed in the collection).

Is there a limit to the number of films and TV shows I can have in my UltraViolet collection?

No. You can add as many purchased titles to your collection as you wish.

Can I add previously purchased films and TV shows to my UltraViolet account?

Not at this time; however, UltraViolet was designed to support this feature, so if film/TV studios and/or retailers choose to make such "upgrade" offers available, you'll be able to easily add existing titles to your UltraViolet Account.

How can I access/watch my UltraViolet films and TV shows?

You can stream to many internet-connected devices, including some set-top boxes and you can download copies to your computer or portable media player for when you don't have good internet access. You may need to download an UltraViolet-enabled application to your mobile device. Not all mobile devices are supported for all titles and the supported devices may differ from studio to studio. Please contact the studio directly if you have queries as to whether your chosen title is available to view on your portable media player.

Do I need to purchase special equipment to use UltraViolet?

No. As well as playing the discs on your existing DVD or Blu-ray player, you can stream your UltraViolet collection to your Mac or PC, your iPod or Android device among others.  You don't need any special equipment or additional technology. However, some devices will be marketed that are optimised to work with UltraViolet right out of the box, and you may be interested in making such a feature one of your "checklist" items when buying new devices.

How many different UltraViolet films and TV shows can my shared Account Members watch at the same time?

Unlimited if they are watching downloaded (local) copies, and up to three streams at the same time. For full details on your UltraViolet Rights, go to the official UltraViolet website .

Will my UltraViolet Rights expire?

The code for adding your UltraViolet copy to your collection will expire two years after the title's release date. Once added to your collection, your rights to the film or TV show you purchase do not expire and you can continue to view your content beyond the expiry date.

Does UltraViolet work worldwide?

Currently UK purchases can only be added to your collection from the UK. Streaming may be available outside of the UK. If streaming rights are not available in a given geography, you can download your content to be able to watch it wherever you and your devices may be.
