Lightning Deal Overview

All Lightning Deals appear on the "Today's Deals" page. To view this page, click the Today's Deals link above the search bar on any Amazon.co.uk page.

A Lightning Deal is a promotion in which a discount is offered on a limited quantity of an item for a limited time. These deals are available on Amazon.co.uk until either the time for that promotion expires or all the available promotional discounts are claimed. A customer can claim a particular deal once only.

When a Lightning Deal is available, here's what you'll see:

  • The item eligible for the deal and any variations of that item (for example, different colours or sizes)
  • The current Amazon.co.uk price, the Lightning Deal price and the Lightning Deal discount
  • A progress bar showing what percentage of promotional discounts have already been claimed
  • A timer showing how much time is left to claim the available promotional discounts
  • An "Add to Basket" button if there are available promotional discounts

To buy an item at the Lightning Deal discount, first you need to claim the deal by adding it to your Shopping Basket. Claiming the deal reserves the item for you for 15 minutes only. You must proceed to checkout and complete your order for the item to purchase the item at the promotional discount.

If the promotional time for a Lightning Deal hasn't expired yet, but all promotional discounts have been claimed but not purchased, here's what you will see:

  • A "Join Waitlist" button
  • The status bar will show that 100% of the promotional discounts have been claimed
  • A Help link to view "What is a waitlist?"

The following summary flowchart explains the process:

Find a Lightning Deal

Lightning Deals now run on the Today's Deals page every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of every week.

You'll also be able to see if a Lightning Deal is available on a product by looking at the "Add to Basket" box on the right hand side of the product detail page. If a deal is available, you'll see the option to choose the 'Lightning Deal Price' above the Regular Price. In cases where a product has variations (size, colour, etc) you'll see the option to "View Lightning Deal" if your selection is eligible.

Lightning Deals may also appear on the category pages accessible from the Shop All Departments menu. Deals may not always be available in all categories.

Each deal will be available for a specified period of time. There may be more than one deal offered at any one time between 9am and 10pm. Please revisit the Today's Deal page to check for changes to Lightning Deal schedules.

Lightning Deals that are not yet available will be marked "Coming Soon", with the exact start time listed. These will be marked "Upcoming Deal".

Claim a Lightning Deal

The "Add to Basket" button on a Lightning Deal shows that the deal is available to claim. Only one promotional discount is available per Lightning Deal per customer.

To claim a Lightning Deal:

  1. Sign into your Amazon.co.uk account and find the deal either before the promotion time ends or before they have all been claimed.
  2. If you're claiming the deal from the Deal's Page, click the Add to Basket button on the Lightning Deal to claim one of the available promotional discounts:

If you're claiming the deal from the product detail page, select the Lightning Deal price and then click the Add deal to Basket button:

  3. You must complete your order using the same Amazon.co.uk account you used when claiming the Lightning Deal. Lightning Deal promotional discounts are not transferrable to other Amazon.co.uk accounts.

After you add the deal to your Shopping Basket, a timer will display below the deal details showing how long you have to complete your order and purchase the item at the Lightning Deal discount. You'll see the Lightning Deal's status change to "Claimed", and you won't be able to add additional quantities of the same deal to your basket.

Complete an Order

After claiming the Lightning Deal, the item will be available in your Shopping Basket at the Lightning Deal price for 15 minutes only and will be displayed as "Lightning Deal Price". You must complete your order within 15 minutes, or the promotional discount will expire for you and your basket will display the everyday Amazon price for that item.

To complete your order through the Shopping Basket and buy the item at the promotional discount:

  1. Click the Proceed to Checkout button from your Shopping Basket to check out. The checkbox for Use your Gift and promotional balance must be checked for your Lightning Deal promotion to be applied. You must not uncheck it:
  2. Please Note: If you already have a Gift or promotional balance on your account at the time of placing your order, the Lightning Deal promotional discount will be added to this amount and deducted from your order total. It’s not possible to separate any Gift or promotional balances on your account from the Lightning Deal promotional discount.

  3. We cannot honour a Lightning Deal promotional discount if you have not completed your order for the item within 15 minutes of claiming it. Limited quantities of all Lightning Deals are available and adding an item to your basket reserves that item for you for up to 15 minutes only.

Join a Waitlist

Once all the promotional discounts have been claimed, if the promotional time for a Lightning Deal hasn't expired, a limited number of spaces will be made available on a "waitlist". If customers who claimed the promotional discount don't complete their purchase within 15 minutes of claiming the deal, the discounts will be made available to customers on the waitlist, on a first-come-first-served basis.

To join a waitlist:

  1. Sign in to your Amazon account.
  2. Click the Join Waitlist button on a Lightning Deal to place yourself on the waitlist. When you join a waitlist, you'll see your place in the queue and a message indicating your 'chance' of becoming eligible to claim the Lightning Deal if you stay in the queue. Your chance of claiming the deal will be indicated as GOOD (you are in the top 20% of the queue), MEDIUM (if you are in the section of the queue below the top 20% and above the bottom 40%), or POOR (you are in the bottom 40% of the queue).
  3. When you reach the top of the waitlist, you will be notified that a promotional discount has become available. An alert will display in the upper right-hand corner of your Amazon page. You will see that the deal is available to add to your basket, and you will see how much time is remaining to do that.
  4. You are now ready to claim the Lightning Deal. You must add the deal to your Shopping Basket within the time limit remaining or the deal will be assigned to the next customer on the waitlist.
  5. A waitlist automatically expires at 23:59 GMT on the day the Lightning Deal was available. All customers on the waitlist then lose their chance to claim the Lightning Deal.
The "Join Waitlist" button is active only when there are places available on the waitlist. The button is re-activated any time new places become available on the waitlist.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I have to purchase the product at the Lightning Deal discount after claiming the deal?
You will be given 15 minutes to complete your order after claiming the deal. This means you have 15 minutes to click on "Proceed to Checkout" from your Basket, to confirm your purchase details (payment and delivery details, gifting options etc.) and to click on the "Place your order" button.

What does "% now claimed" mean?
The status bar on the Lightning Deal shows the percent of promotional discounts that are currently in customers' baskets or have already been used. The percentage will change as customers purchase the item or allow the discount to expire in their baskets.

What does "This deal is in your basket" mean?
After you click the "Add to Basket" button, you'll see the Lightning Deal's status change to "This deal is in your Basket". You will also see the time remaining for you to complete your purchase to receive the Lightning Deal discount. One promotional discount is available per Lightning Deal per customer. You won't be able to add additional quantities of the same deal to your basket. If you delete a claimed Lightning Deal from your Shopping Basket, you'll no longer qualify for the Lightning Deal price.

Why does the Lightning Deal say "Claimed"?

After you place your order, the Lightning Deal's status will change to "Claimed", indicating that you have purchased the deal at the Lightning Deal discount. If you delete the deal from your Shopping Basket, the deal status will still display as "Claimed".

Why am I seeing "Checking Deal Status"?
For some very popular Lightning Deals, you may see a "Checking deal status" message for several seconds after you click the "Add to Basket" or "Join Waitlist" button. When a large number of customers are trying to claim the same deal or waitlist place, we process all attempts in order of receipt.  You’ll see "Checking Deal Status" while we verify eligibility on a first-come, first-served basis before applying the promotional discount to an account. If promotional discounts or waitlist places are still available for the item when we get to your request, you will see the appropriate status change on your deal.

Why does the Lightning Deal say it is Expired/Sold Out?
Once the time for the deal expires, the Lightning Deal will display "Expired". When all promotional stock has been sold, the Lightning Deal will display "Sold Out". You will usually have the option to visit the item's product detail page and purchase it at the current Amazon price, but the purchase will not be eligible for the Lightning Deal promotional discount.
