The original Jazz Suite no. 2 was indeed written for Knusevitsky in the late 30's but it sure ain't the work that's on that recording or any other! Naxos didn't exactly help either by calling the Suite for Variety Orchestra/Band as Jazz Suite no. 2 on the cover of their recording despite mentioning the discovery of the piano score to the REAL no. 2 (and McBurney's subsequent involvement) in their sleeve notes. As you mentioned, the Suite for Variety Orchestra/Band was a collection of various bits and bobs from his incidental/film and possibly ballet music - I don't even know when DSCH compiled it but whenever it was I'm guessing it wasn't officially released until possibly after the death of Uncle Joe and even then it may have been for informal purposes as it was never, to the best of my knowledge, given an official opus number (the original Jazz Suite no. 2 was designated as his op. 50b whereas the work we now know as Suite for Variety Orchestra/Band has also been mistakenly credited as op. 50b on occasion).
Reply to this post.

S. The 1991 recording from Chailly/Concertgebouw contains Jazz Suite No 2, subtitled 'Suite for Promenade Orchestra'. The booklet note says it was written in 1938 for the State Orchestra for Jazz, conductor Viktor Knushevitsky. Is this the misidentified work?I've just answered my own question! Our old friend Laural Fay says the Jazz Suite No 2 had three movements - Scherzo, Lullaby and Serenade - and was long believed lost. A piano score was found in 2000 and orchestrated. The eight movement work recorded by Chailly and others as 'Jazz Suite No 2' is a compilation of arrangements, chiefly from film music. The orchestration of the real Jazz Suite No 2 was done by Gerard McBurney who also reconstructed the opera 'Orango' mentioned by Piso in the other related thread.
Reply to this post.

RE: 'Can people suggest 'classical'music that has been influenced by or employs characteristics of Gospel, Blues or Jazz idioms...'

Well Piso, in 147 opuses there's quite a lot of DSCH that I can live without; but much more that I can't live without.
Reply to this post.

RE: 'Can people suggest 'classical'music that has been influenced by or employs characteristics of Gospel, Blues or Jazz idioms...'

JJD, if so, then I'll live forever without it.
