Hi!I've just read The Book Soul by Rachel Mann. As a middle-aged woman myself I feel your pain. It seems we get relegated to very stereotypical roles once past a certain age. In The Book Soul, however, the main character is 40+ but also a real heroine; no hot flushes, middle classes or jam mentioned. There's also a fair bit of gentle humour running through the story as we look at life through Elsie's eyes in all its ridiculousness. Hope this helps.

The Last Season,The Story of a Marriage, is a novel about an attractive woman of 49 who has been married for 27 years. She's restless and wants to have a new career. When she gets a job with a real estate developer, her husband is suspicious about the high salary she's offered. When he asks her boss what his intentions are, the fellow replies, "I intend to marry your wife." Her boss values her creativity and her instincts; her husband values her cooking!

The Kay Scarpetta books. In the first book she is 40 and as they continue she grows to be elderly. They're really good. I reccomend them!

I read this a while back The Fall of the Misanthrope: I Bitch, therefore I am and even though the main characters are young (to me) the secondary characters, which feature very heavily are in their 60s. They are very funny and show the youngsters a thing or two!
