Would Alan Carr really be as funny if you took away his gay mannerisms and lisping accent? He would certainly cease to become a figure of fun for the (usually male) heterosexual population who believe that he is nothing but a ridiculous gay stereotype. In contrast, the dénouement of Kenneth Williams' bitingly funny and acerbic performances concluded with such an applause of adulation and respect from his (mainly heterosexual) audiences, that his sexual orientation was rarely called into question even though he was by all accounts a gay man who never managed to accept his homosexuality. Perhaps from now on Mr Carr should try to play it 'straight' like (the so not camp) John Bishop and see how many laughs he gets then......
