A world class album!, 25 Jun. 2002
This CD is find of the century for me. The compositions (all by Colin Steele) range from sublime beauty to breath-taking excitement, and the playing is quite simply stunning.
Steele has brought together a team of musicians that, as a band, stand up to any jazz group in the world; the rhythm section of Dave Milligan (piano), Brian Shiel (bass), and John Rae (drums) play with an incredible awareness and understanding of the music, while the two horns of Steele (trumpet)and Julian Arguelles (Tenor & Soprano sax) intertwine with long, searching melodic lines that defy comparison.
This, of course, is not to say that the musicians don't get a chance to shine on their own. Steele's soloing is consistantly lyrical and creative throughout, while the contributions from Milligan and Arguelles are equally as compelling (check out both their solos on "The Sidestep"!). It's so encouraging to hear a jazz group from a nation as small as Scotland producing a wonderfully defined sound with a unique sense of style.
This is quite simply a sensational recording. If you only buy two albums this year, buy this one twice.
