5.0 out of 5 stars a follow-up to Ms Strathie's excellent biography of "Birdie" Bowers, 28 Nov. 2015
This is, up to a point, a follow-up to Ms Strathie's excellent biography of "Birdie" Bowers, who perished on the Scott expedition to the South Pole. It tells the stories of some of those who supported that expedition and their subsequent service in World War 1. The stories themselves are full of incident and well told, and they bring out the differing impact which the Antarctic experience had on different members of the expedition and the way their relationships subsequently developed. The book helps one understand the war by describing the experiences of this cross-section of talented individuals. Ms Strathie's research appears thorough, her writing is clear and concise and the book is well illustrated with pictures and maps. Altogether a most interesting and enjoyable read.

As a general consumer and observer of the news media I found this book very informative and enjoyable. The historical introduction brings out how unusual the newspapers with which those of us in the UK and US grew up were. The author then discusses how newspapers have tried to respond to the loss of much of the advertising market before turning to new ways of doing journalism using the web. He has assembled an impressive corpus of examples from across the world, but so far many are still at an experimental stage. The writing throughout is clear and energetic. the examples often colourful and the judgements measured. It will fascinating to go back and re-read the book in 20 years' time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping drama and dry wit, 5 Oct. 2013
This review is from: Bella's Betrothal (Kindle Edition)
From its thrilling and mysterious opening to its exciting climax this story gripped my attention. The leading characters are glamorous, headstrong and sharply intelligent, and their exchanges are punchy and laced with dry wit. There is a rich cast of supporting characters, some warmly sympathetic and at least a couple of out and out villains. The gracious but stiff setting of Georgian Edinburgh is carefully captured. All in all it is an unconventional but highly entertaining romantic novel, and a strong follow-up to "Mariah's Marriage.

5.0 out of 5 stars sparkling dialogue, 19 May 2013

I loved the cut and thrust of the dialogue between the leading characters in this romance, which brings to mind the duelling which we learn is going out of fashion in Regency London. It's an original plot too; a heroine with a vocation, a hero doing most of the pursuing,a wonderfully colourful villain and a scary climax. The writing is stylish and full of period detail. I hope Anne Stenhouse has more novels in the pipeline.
