4.0 out of 5 stars 44 years of brilliance, 10 Jun. 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Dylan (3CD) (Audio CD)
For the uninitiated this is a great starting point, 51 tracks spread over 44 years showing a master lyricist at work. 90% of the selections are perfect and couldn't possibly have been left off but there are certainly some ommisions. Why only one track from Highway 61 revisited - even if that one track is Bob's best moment, Like a rolling stone. Surely Desolation Row should have featured and Ballad of a thin man. Three tracks from Oh Mercy is one or two too many and they're not even the best tracks. Brownsville Girl is a dodgy choice. Two other big ommisions are Mr Bojangles and Every grain of sand. And the choice of tracks from 'Modern Times' is poor with two of the weaker tracks making it - why no 'Working man's blues' or 'Ain't talkin'. I suppose all Bob fans have there own favourites and making a compilation of the most prolific artist of the last 50 years is a tough ask.

4.0 out of 5 stars some great moments, 5 Mar. 2008

First the good. The start with the amazing harmonies of Because (surely rivalling anything done by Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys) leading into Get Back is truly great. Also George's acoustic version of 'While my guitar gently weeps' is a gem. However, I for one am not convinced by the backwards version of Sun King - Gnik Nus and I could do without another version of 'Octopus's Garden' which was rubbish in the first place.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wot - no Fool's Overture', 23 Jan. 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a pretty good overview of the work and career of Supertramp but who decided to leave out their masterpiece - 'Fool's Overture'. It's like a Zeppelin best of without 'Stairway to Heaven' or a Beatles Collection without 'A day in the life'. Also for newcomers to Supertramp it would be better to start off with the 'Crime of the century' or 'Breakfast in America' albums where the tracks are in a more natural order, the way the band meant it to be. For these reasons I can only give it three stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars back on form, 29 Oct. 2007

This is worth buying just for 'no hidden path'. I haven't been so instantly excited by a Neil Young track since first hearing 'Like a Hurricane' in the late 70s. Although I've only listened through twice there are a good 4 or 5 great tracks on here - buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A suprisingly good freebie, 23 Oct. 2007
This review is from: Working Man's Cafe (Audio CD)
Most newspaper freebies go straight in the bin as they are usually rubbish. However, this Ray Davies album is well worth listening to. I have always been a fan of the Kinks - Waterloo Sunset being one of the best songs ever written - but hadn't really encountered any of Ray's solo stuff. The title track is great, who hasn't wandered through a modern clone-town centre wishing they could find a friendly cafe like in their younger days. I also love 'Imaginary Man' which could have been a Blur track. The finally track (on the freebie at least) Voodoo Walk and the opener Vietnam Cowboys are also both great.

5.0 out of 5 stars A magnificent introduction to Van, 16 Oct. 2007
If you've only heard odd songs from the master then this could be the double album for you. And it's exceptionally good value with so many classic tracks. Be wary though because once you've listened to some of the classics featured here, you'll be flashing the credit card to buy up his back catalogue. If like me you've a stack of Van already in your collection then there is no real need to buy this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars how can this sell for only £3.99, 10 Oct. 2007
This review is from: Moondance (Audio CD)
In today's throwaway world some CDs should never be sold for less than a tenner - this is one of them.

It's always a flip of the coin between this and Astral Weeks for Van's best and on balance 'Moondance' just about gets the vote. Side One (the first 5 track in vinyl speak) are all out and out classics - Into the Mystic and Caravan are amazing. Side 2 is weaker although it contains proably the best track on the album - 'Brand new day'

5.0 out of 5 stars Dylan's Best, 10 Oct. 2007

Bob's best album with Highway 61 and Blonde on Blonde hot on its heels.
Top tracks throughout, my favourites being Idiot Wind, Simple Twist of Fate and Tangled up in blue.

5.0 out of 5 stars In the top 5 albums of all time, 10 Oct. 2007
This review is from: Dark Side of the Moon (Audio CD)
Definitely in the top 5 albums of all time, possibly even the best.
Contains one of the top 10 songs of all time - 'TIME' with one of the best lyrics, apart from a few Dylan songs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good songs, great lyrics, poor production, 9 Oct. 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Magic (Audio CD)
I agree with other reviewers that there is very little filler on Magic. In fact all of the songs are worth a listen or three. This album is growing on me with each listen but I am still frustrated by the production quality, as another reviewer said there is too much mushiness. It sounds a bit like a live album without the clarity you'd expect in the studio. It's a shame that Clarence's sax solos and some of the guitar breaks get a bit lost in a 'blur of sounds' akin to a Daniel Lanois production. Try listening to Dylan's Modern Times for great production quality.
