3.0 out of 5 stars bright, 3 Mar 2014

it's great because it has Hello Kitty on it, and it mains powered so you don't eat batteries. It's not so great because it is rather bright and has no dimmer, and no timer to switch off after a period so my daughter sleeps with it on all night, which I don't really like.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quirky, but I enjoyed it, 3 Mar 2014
This review is from: Swimming Studies (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I have to say that I've really enjoyed this book. It is a touch self-indulgent but all the more engaging because of the very personal nature of the episodes described. The hopping back and forth between current events, adult memories and child memories of swim competitions give it a raw, stream of conciousness feeling, as if the writer is re-living those events.. and their re-living has become so real that they are jumbled with present life.

Naturally, like many memoirs, it doesn't have a shape, but each little story is tangy and worth tasting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Incredible, powerful, emotional, 27 Sep 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The range of this book is dazzling. From academic to personal, it's something that doesn't fit into a category. Myself, I don't like academic texts on politics or gender. I don't like worthy books written from the library. But this book is something else. It's honest, it's personal. It has the wisdom of an academic mind coupled with love and personal experience and years of reflection on a painful, painful moment. It's a true memoir and a beautiful, fascinating story. It's so good, I gave pre-order copy as a gift and will order my own copy.

It's not for everyone, for sure. And the truth is so strong, she can't settle on it right away, and has to circle back to the present constantly; breaking the "4th wall" and addressing the reader directly. For me, she's trying to unpick decades of assumptions, the key one being acceptance of other ways of life as being equal. All people are equal, for sure, but not all cultures are equally worthwhile; it's not just another way of living, it's actually just worse, it's brutal, it's emotionally crippling, it produces learned helplessness, it doesn't produce. Sadly, it's also very durable.

All this would a dry lecture if it weren't for the personal, the memoir, the romantic hope of the young Phyllis. Even though you know from the start that she has been a fool, the tragedy has fired her whole life.

3.0 out of 5 stars I'm not an MBA student, 16 Aug 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a very large, very expensive book (I didn't pay, I got it on Vine). These are textbook prices that you would likely only pay if this was a course book that you had to get. There is too much information and the cost is too high for the casual reader, or someone who wants to pick up enough terminology to do some Googling.

However, the quality of the material is also textbook. Readable and well presented all in a nice quality book. This is a fine job. YOu don't need to have any knowledge to start reading. Will this help you to have a great strategy? Personally, I think not; but then, it isn't trying to do that. It's a not a business self-help book, it's a text book.

4.0 out of 5 stars world music from back in the day, 13 Jan 2013
This review is from: City of Stone (MP3 Download)
I first heard this music when I was still at school in the early 90's. A teacher had written a musical set in Bolivia (it's a long story) and the music of Rumillajta served as the muse and the inspiration.

It is transporting stuff and really takes you to those mountains. I'm not saying that the music is authentic andean music - how would I know? - but it is wonderful stuff. Ranging from the haunting to the foot-stomping. The melodies and harmonies are almost alien but clearly there is Spanish influence there too.

If you want to take the next step from el condor pasa, this could be it.

3.0 out of 5 stars bad luck? or flimsy, 20 Dec 2012
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I had used these for only an hour when i removed them from my head and broke one of the arms off. I wasn't that careless and for an item that is intended to take part in extreme sports it wasn't a great result. I've been unable to repair them. The results from that one hour were pretty good, unsurprisingly sound wasn't great but the images were pretty good. It isn't super easy to use but can capture unique footage. I used it to film my kids learning how to cycle so i could help them without having to hold a camera or a phone.

3.0 out of 5 stars good lightweight suitcase, 28 Sep 2012
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This bag arrived coincidentally just before a family holiday so we were able to put it to the test straight away. it is very light but soundly constructed with good stitching and so on. THe handle and wheels aspect works well. The conversion to a backpack is something that, whilst I played with it at home, I can't say I have used in anger. It might be good occasionally, but it is unlikely that you'll be using it a lot in an urban setting and why would you take a wheely suitcase offroad?

So the only thing that was a little disappointing was the fact that the handle for the wheels intrudes into the bag compartment, hence you can store a little less stuff than you might think. However, there are a few pockets and compartments inside. This is a long weekend suitcase for those who take clothing options. For the bare minimalist, you might stretch a few more days.

For the money, reasonable value and a nice size. I'm not sure that there are real advantages over a conventional suitcase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like it said on the ads "as smooth as a blade", 28 Sep 2012
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The skinny: really excellent close shave, even through 4 day stubble.

This is a big beast of a shaver, it is quite large with a wide pivoting head that looks less technical than some new shavers. Charged up, the display shows 60, meaning the number of minutes of shaving that you have left, which is a useful feature. Why would I care about the % of change? minutes is exactly what I need to know.

In use the shaver is loud and buzzy, rather like a mini orbital sander, but it doesn't jar your face. A few passes over light stubble is an easy job on the face and even manages those tricky neck regions. Saver seems to have amazing ability to blitz through long stubble as well. I have very thick hairs and my stubble is dense but this was able to deal with a 4 day growth in about the same or less time than a wet shave.

caveat: i've not lived with it for long so can't comment on the recharging or the lifetime of the product.
