This is a great adaptation of Ford Madox Ford's work by Tom Stoppard. The acting is uniformly excellent, but I particularly loved Benedict Cumberbatch as Christopher Tietjens, quiet, closed in, but expressing his inner feelings by movement and facial expression. Equally good is Rebecca Hall as his wife Sylvia, playing a woman who is frequently a monster and making her totally believable and even, at times, sympathetic. The portrayal of a society changing from Edwardian values to more modern ones is totally believable, with a fascinating portrayal of the suffragettes, as exemplified by Christopher's real love Valentine, played well by Adelaide Clemens and World War 1 is shown as the horror it was.

The interviews with cast and production are interesting extras.

The different stories are variable in quality. Some like the Emma Thompson and Bill Nighy stories are great. The Hugh Grant and Colin Firth strands are good, while Martin Freeman's is a one joke story but cute. The kid in love and the daggy pom finding gorgeous sexy girls in America are cringe inducing.

There are good extras .

This show is a lot of fun, with excellent special effects. Who wouldn't like a big bad wolf who controls his urges with diet and pilates? The writing is good with many unexpected twists and the acting matches it. I cannot predict where the plot is going. When will series 2 be available?

5.0 out of 5 stars Little known gem, 20 July 2012

This is a lovely, gentle film with some great performances. Wendy Hiller is wonderful as the stubborn Joan Webster determined to have the finest things in life by marrying a wealthy man. Roger Livesey provides strong support as Torquil MacNeil, naval officer and laird of the island or Kiloran, which her fiance has leased.

They are both forced to remain on Mull with bad weather preventing them from reaching the island and Joan fights her growing attraction for the impoverished Torquil. The photography is wonderful, with the Scottish scenery providing a dramatic background and the climactic whirlpool scene, for the time, is very believable.

As is typical of British films of the time the supporting performances are uniformly good, my favourites being Pamela Brown, Nancy Price and Finlay Currie. The film provides no great surprises but is a beautiful rendering of a young woman's journey from financial ambition to acceptance of life and love. Not to be missed.

This is a funny, feel good movie, which I love and so does everyone I have shown it to. It is well written and acted and altogether a joy. My only problem is that my French is not good enough to appreciate the extras disk which is not subtitled.
