5.0 out of 5 stars The best possible way to display your minifigs, 20 Dec 2011
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
What can I say? This minifig display case is rather lovely. So lovely, in fact, that I've now bought my second one.

The case is made of a really rather sturdy plastic, in classic Lego yellow. The frontage is transparent, and folds down on a hinge. Thankfully, it also doesn't reflect light too badly, so you get a pretty clear view of the lego inside.

The plates to stand your minifigs are 6x4 in size, so you get plenty of space per minifig. Each one can easily hold a utensil with space to space.

If you have a collection of special minifigs, this case is a must buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bought for a 30 year old, 9 July 2011
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
I bought this for my 30 year old (me). He loves it.

There are some nice little details in this set, including a falling axe, working trapdoor to make your minifigs fall through, and a collapsing pillar. As well as the initial play value, this set will be a good basis for other models based around Roman architecture, due to the pillars and sloped roof it comes with.

The fact that it comes with four minifigs, a giant crab and a submarine with grabbing hands only increases its playability.

Absolutely well worth [].

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible paper, terrible typesetting, 23 Oct 2010
This review is from: Heat Wave (Nikki Heat) (Paperback)
I should begin by saying that this review is not a review of the novel, but a review of the physical paperback book itself.

Frankly, this Hyperion reprint of Heat Wave is the worst physical book that I've ever had the misfortune to purchase. It's comparable to the worst books that you don't want but get for free with a glossy magazine. The paper stock that's been used is cheap, rough and off-white. The type used is tiny, and forced incredibly close to the edge of the pages. Because of all this, the physical book itself is tiny and thin. I've not even read a single page yet, and I'm already dreading it. This should not be my reaction to getting to read a novel based around a TV Show that I love.

Avoid this version of the novel like the plague.

The Non-Designer's Design Book
The Non-Designer's Design Book
by Robin Williams
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm not a designer, and I liked this book, 9 Mar 2010
I'm not a designer. That much is obvious from looking at the websites I produce that haven't been designed by someone else. That doesn't mean I don't care though; which is why on Christmas day last year I ordered this book.

I've only just got round to reading the book, but I'm glad I did. As a learning book it's deliberately quite lightweight and easy to get through in a short time, in the same way that Steve Krug's "Don't Make Me Think" is designed to be absorbed in a couple of hours on a flight. All told, I spent about three hours with this book, on my tube journeys to and from work this week.

Robin starts her journey by briefly explaining the concepts of Contrast, Repetition, Alignment and Proximity (anyone spot an acronym there?), before moving on to explore each concept in greater detail. As Robin repeatedly tells us in her book, by being able to name the concepts you're able to identify them and use them deliberately rather than accidentally.

The second half of the book deals with type; the different styles of typefaces, how to combine them and horrible errors of judgement to avoid.

Spread throughout the book are a bunch of mini quizzes and exercises designed to get you thinking about what you've just read. The quizzes are a nice touch, and I'm sure I've retained more knowledge because of them than I would have done if I'd just read through from cover to cover.

The book covers design in general, rather than being focused on the web, print or presentations. Whilst Williams has written a book called "The Non-Designer's Web Book" I specifically chose to buy this one because both I wanted a general overview book and because the web book is from 2005 (a lifetime ago on the web) and has some mixed reviews. "The Non-Designer's Design Book" did not disappoint - it's given me that overview that I was looking for, and I now feel a bit more comfortable that my designs will actually work.

The Definitive Guide to Apache Mod_Rewrite (Definitive Guides)
The Definitive Guide to Apache Mod_Rewrite (Definitive Guides)
by Rich Bowen
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely should be on your reading list if you want to use mod_rewrite, 26 Feb 2010
Rich Bowen (also author of Apache Server Unleashed, The Apache Administror's Handbook and The Apache Cookbook) clearly knows his stuff and guides the reader through the module with ease, introducing key concepts as he goes. There are times, however, when to me the book feels as though it is aimed just a bit too much at the beginner to be a truly definitive guide to the module. This doesn't mean I don't like the book though - I think it's fantastic and it really should be on everyone's reading list if they're seriously wanting to learn how to use mod_rewrite.

The book assumes absolutely no prior knowledge of the mod_rewrite module, and is broken up into an easy to digest 12 step programme which will get you using the module in no time at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars An extra bit of juice, just when you need it most., 15 Dec 2009
I bought this external battery because I was sick and tired of my iPhone running out of battery and dying on me after less than 12 hours of decent use whilst I was at conferences (where I didn't have a computer or poweropnit to charge from).

I'd seen other, more expensive, external batteries elsewhere but since all I was wanting to do was give an occasional top-up charge I decided to take a punt and throw a tenner at this battery. I'm glad that I did. Comparing this to the built in iPhone's capacity of 1400mAh, this looked like it should be able to get at least a full extra charge out of the iPhone before it died. Which, it did.

Yes, the connector might be a little unprotected, but I've happily thrown this into my bag and so far it's not got broken. The power indicator on the front is easy enough to press to see how much charge you have left available, and it's nice and easy to charge the battery up when you need to - you simply connect it up to an iPod cable, just like you would with your iPhone. Simple.

I'd absolutely recommend this battery to my friends (in fact, I already have).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for picking up after our animals (and my fiancée), 21 Nov 2009
We have rats (deliberately, as pets). Unfortunately, one of the things they're prone to doing is knocking their bedding out of their cage onto the floor. Given that I'm ridiculously lazy, this then ends up staying on the floor before being trampled through the living room. Not particularly pleasant.

The Dyson DC-31 Animal is fantastic for dealing with this. It lives down by their cage and gets pulled out whenever we see any mess on the floor. Because it's so small it's stupidly easy to pick up and run across any small bits of mess, leaving us with a house that doesn't have rat bedding strewn across it. Our "main" vacuum is also a Dyson, the wee little DC 23 stowaway Animal, but we were finding we just weren't getting it out for the small jobs. The DC 31 Animal is just so much nicer for those little jobs. The extra bit of power you can get it to give you when you need it is fantastic too (although I haven't really needed it as yet, the standard power is perfectly good enough). Contrary to other reviewers I've also found it really hand for doing the stairs.

The main reason for getting the Animal rather than the normal version wasn't because of our rats though - it was because of my fiancée. She has wonderfully curly hair, but unfortunately it has a habit of coming out and making a mess all over the house. The motorised brushes you get with the Animals deal with this fantastically, and I couldn't recommend them highly enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally - Bowie's Crotch in High Definition, 16 Nov 2009
There have been some reviewers who have said this blu-ray release offers nothing over and above the DVD releases. To that, I say "Nothing? Nothing? NOTHING? Nothing, tra la la?". Whilst it's true that this 23 year old film does look worn down in parts (particularly Firey scenes), in others it's lovely.

I should point out that I've long been a fan of this film. I first had a recorded off the TV version (that cut off the first two minutes) when I was tiny, since then have bought it twice on DVD and have now shelled out for the blu-ray. I say "shelled out", frankly though the thing that swung the purchase for me was that it was on "buy one get one free" here on Amazon along with Ghostbusters. And for that price, I'm glad I did. The picture is a little step up from DVD quality in my opinion, and that little bit of extra clarity gave me a little bit of extra enjoyment.

My major annoyance with this release though is that the subtitles still don't cover the songs. How are you meant to run a "proper" movie karaoke night if you don't have subtitles for the songs, hmm? Given that the film is equal parts crotch, a whiny girl, songs and puppets I'm surprised that the songs are still the forgotten piece in the jigsaw puzzle. It's just so unfair. But then, I say that so often you really have to wonder what my basis for comparison is.

Overall, if you have Labyrinth already on DVD then don't bother with the blu-ray unless it's heavily discounted like it was when I bought it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Thin Wrinkled Pages did not please me, 13 Oct 2009
Having previously bought a Moleskine Pocket Sketch-book I purchased this Moleskine erroneously, thinking it was the same thing. It wasn't. Where the Sketch-book has lovely thick heavy paper that feels superb to write on, the normal Moleskine feels cheap and poorly put together to me. The paper was much thinner than I like, thin enough to see text on the next page through the sheets. The sheets themselves were also slightly wrinkled, as though moisture damaged during storage.

If I'd bought this as my first Moleskine I would have been very disappointed. For my money, the Sketch-book version is clearly the way to go even though it only has 80 pages, compared to this Moleskine's 192.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent whiteboard for the money, 13 Oct 2009
I've had this whiteboard for just over two months now, and I've got to say I'm very happy with it. Unlike Ms Harmer my board was delivered quickly and undamaged. The surface of the board is easy to write on, and wipes cleanly and quickly even when ink has been left on it for a couple of weeks.

I'm now looking to buy a second board to go alongside it and create one big whiteboard wall in my little office.
