Chocolate Master Class: Essential Recipes and Techniques
Chocolate Master Class: Essential Recipes and Techniques
by Frédéric Bau
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £13.46

2.0 out of 5 stars Technically poor, 25 May 2016
Very poor from a technical point of view, which really surprised me. 100mls of cream does not weigh 100g - only water does. Due to the higher fat content, cream is less dense. A fundamental error, which does nothing for Valrhona's reputation.

Last time I saw this in production, it was macerating in an oak barrel that contained 1,000,000 litres, not what I would have considered a "small oak barrel" as the description beside it said it was the largest oak barrel in the world.
For anyone who hasn't tried it, it's a similar flavour to Dubonnet, although much less sweet - and without the "mixed herb" flavour of some martini/vermouth drinks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy these elsewhere, 2 Nov. 2014
This review is from: Gazetta Table Lamp
This is a superb light, and means that my husband can now see to read. I bought 3 of these for £480 at Costco, and went back for the matching table lights at £90 each.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant lights, 15 Jan. 2014

These lights are absolutely billiant, except for the price. Costco have them on sale in January every year, and you could get 2 for this price and still have change.

3.0 out of 5 stars Waverley, 9 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I quite liked the book, and like others, it was good to read one set in the UK. However, one really irritating thing was the made up name Waverley. It seemed obvious that it was Wilmslow. It was like being back in the days of Jane Eyre, and "_shire", and I couldn't help but wonder why on earth he'd done it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and misleading, 16 Jan. 2013

Many of the recipes include Parmesan cheese in the ingredients. If the cheese is really Parmesan it has to be made with animal rennet, otherwise it can't be called Parmesan legally. Could cause embarrassing mistakes for a meat eater using the recipes believing they were really vegetarian.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not only what it says on the tin, 5 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In addition to what it claims on the tin, it will also clean tarnish stains from silver and brass. Years ago, my mother gave me some small silver plated spoons which we've used for eating boiled eggs. Over time they've become coated with silver sulphide - chemico takes the tarnish off gently, without damaging the plating noticeably. We also bought a house with horribly dirty solid brass door knobs that now cost over 100 each. Chemico has cleaned these better than oxalic acid did (and a lot less dangerous).

4.0 out of 5 stars Blue shirt, 26 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Colour slightly disappointing. I was trying to avoid the grey-blue of police shirts, and thought I'd done it. Had the colour been slightly more grey in tone, I would have returned the shirt.

Soeurs Chocolat (Ldp Litterature)

5.0 out of 5 stars Nuns with a difference!, 14 Jan. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I read this book when I borrowed it from the library in my village in France. I had wondered if it had any connection with the book 'Chocolat' and the film about a woman who creates a chocolaterie in a small village. It doesn't.

However, it was even better, in my opinion. The soeurs in question are nuns. Their sole source of income is that from selling chocolate produced in their convent, made from beans harvested from the plantations belonging to the family of a nun. The right to buy these beans at the annual auction in South America was given to them in exchange for the repatriation of the nun's body so that she could be buried 'at home' rather than in France on her death. The only condition attached to the rights were that 2 nuns from the convent would visit them every 10 years.

The book starts when the buildings of the convent are falling down due to lack of money for repairs. The sisters have no money to buy cocoa beans to produce any more, nor the money to pay the air fares for the required trip to South America. The abbot under whose 'protection' they live, has plans to move the dwindling number of nuns to another convent and sell the land for building purposes.

It twists and turns in an almost unbelievable manner, yet despite all the turns remains believable - even at the end, which is completely unexpected. By turns I laughed until the tears ran, almost cried and had to keep reading until the early hours to know that certain characters would be safe.

I bought the copy to give to my uncle as a belated Christmas present - there is almost all human nature within it, and he's trilingual French/English/Picard(patois) so will be able to gain even more from it than me. Sadly it's not available in English who cannot read French.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice idea, shame about details, 1 Jan. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this on request for someone as a present. They were pleased with it, but I found it a little disappointing. Although it is perhaps designed to be portable, I didn't expect it to be as small as it is.

Also, some of the French, while strictly correct, is not current usage. For example, I have never heard a sat nav called anything but a gps. Although beautifully produced with superb illustrations, the print is a bit small for anything but daylight or really good lighting for reading, especially if you have to wear glasses.

Overall, a good try, and most people would find it useful.
