5.0 out of 5 stars I love these Debbie Shore books, 9 Jan. 2015
I love these Debbie Shore books. True there probably isn't anything that you have not seen before but they all have Debbie's touch. Discover 23 storage solutions. It makes tidying fun and you can colour-coordinate projects and home. I love the iron caddy. Forget the plastic and use fabric for under bed storage, garden tote, garment covers and more. Clear instructions and techniques mean that you cannot go wrong. Easy to use for any ability with appealing and useful projects. Great to give as a gift too.

3.0 out of 5 stars NOT Sugar-Free, 9 Jan. 2015
How I would love to say 5 star BUT this is NOT a sugar-free book. Most of the savoury dishes included would not normally contain sugar anyway and recipes that would normally have sugar in them still have it in the form of honey and maple syrup. When have you ever put sugar in roast chicken, kedgeree or poached eggs??? Although it says on Page 8, cut out sugar and use honey and maple syrup instead and work towards cutting those out, this book does not show you how to do this. No-one did their homework here, maple syrup is two-thirds sucrose and on page 13 you will see that sucrose is listed as a hidden sugar. It is one third less than table sugar or refined sugar but it is still sugar. Go steady on the honey, honey. It contains more calories than sugar. It's a beautifully produced book with great recipes for all the family but it is not sugar-free.

5.0 out of 5 stars As a vegetarian it isn't always easy. This book should inspire any vegetarian to be ..., 7 Jan. 2015
How many truly seek local cuisine when overseas? As a vegetarian it isn't always easy. This book should inspire any vegetarian to be more adventurous and seek out the often hidden away 'green kitchens'. You'll find 90 recipes that are vegetarian, vegan and/or gluten-free. But this is more than a cookbook - it is a book of 'stories' and of travel photography. Few would set off on a round the world trip with a seven-month old daughter, but these intrepid travellers not only did it but they also brought back memories to share. It wasn't just for a month or two either, it was four years of their lives. Read about their philosophy, travelling with kids and all the recipes you could want with flavours of exotic places (well sometimes it's just the USA, not so exotic but exciting nevertheless). It's beautifully and engagingly written. The travel photographs just make you want to follow in their footsteps and be there even when they are sampling bacteria-ridden yoghurt gloop! The recipes are split into Breakfasts (like the Rye & Chocolate Croissants and Pumpkin and Almond Waffles), Street Food and Snacks (Halloumi VeggieBurgers will be popular), Salads and Sides (yummy - all of them), Soups (I'll start with Chilled Avocado please), Dinners (I like the two sweet potato dishes), Drips and Drops (drinks to you and me, all very delicious), Desserts (for a girl who believes dinner should start with dessert this ticked all the boxes for healthy desserts), Condiments (spreads including Cacao and Hazelnut mmm, sauces and chutneys). Have a wonderful vegetarian feast every day of the year. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it, 30 Dec. 2014
Caitlin is queen of the crochet hook and here's a book of more of her motifs. I loved her 100 Snowflakes to Crochet book. This book is more versatile than you might imagine from the title - it includes shapes, hearts, trees, animals, Christmas ideas and more. The motifs are beautifully presented in sections with clear photography: Squares, Medallions, Hexagons, Wildlife, Sealife, Flowers, Fruit & Veg, Sun, Moon & Stars, Snowflakes, Special Occasions, Hearts, Hobbies and Doilies. Favourites include the Leafy Square, Fan-crossed Medallion, Offset Snowflake Hexagon, Hummingbird, Branch, Lemon Tree, Sun, Snowflake Doily, Floral Heart and Hot Air Balloon. The instruction pages are clear with written and graph instructions and another photo of the design. At the back of the book there are six projects showing ways in which to use the motifs. I love the scarf. In addition there is a crochet refresher course with superb large diagrams. This book is highly recommended.

Complete Guide to Painting in Acrylics
Complete Guide to Painting in Acrylics

4.0 out of 5 stars good on techniques, 29 Dec. 2014
Find out all you need to know about acrylic painting. This comprehensive book contains techniques, materials, composition and more. Lorena offers expert tips and advice. You get a thorough foundation in the basics, form and surface and 65 techniques and there is a handy technique file reference for quick location of techniques. Please note that included in the techniques are methods like 'applying gesso', 'making a wet palette' so they are not all actual painting techniques. Some of the techniques are step-by-step. They are useful for beginners and also include some advanced techniques such as pouring, grisaille, glazing, decalcomania and airbrush. In Form and Surface, she covers still life and capturing the surface of objects such as wood, fabric, flowers, skin, glass, animal hair, painting landscapes and water and so on. There is a superb step-by-step of painting a portrait and another of plaited hair. For advanced artists there is a chapter called 'Be a Pro'. Unfortunately instead of taking the artist into the next level to explore skills and push the boundaries, this is a rather mundane chapter on giving your art a title, signing it, framing it and photographing it. The book is filled with colour reproductions of Lorena's art and that of others. I was disappointed that in the 'Keeping Acrylics Workable' section there was no mention of Atelier Interactive, which are my acrylics of choice because you don't need retarders or wet palettes. In other respects this book is comprehensive no matter what your budget, the author presents options in materials, in fact there are 45 pages given to this section alone. This book is great for building skills.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than good enough to eat, 21 Dec. 2014
A real feast for the eyes and a true treat for the tongue. Amazing, mouthwatering and delicious. Decorated introduces you to extraordinary cakes. Beautiful cakes are fabulously photographed. The instructions are easy to use with all the finishing touches that make a cake just that bit special. Step by step techniques with photos render these concoctions achievable. My favourite recipes include White Rose Cake, Fig and Almond Cake, Black Forest Cake, Simple Vanilla Cake (4 layers no less) - oh who am I kidding, I love them all. One of my favourite cake cookbooks. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars All the Bags You Need, 16 Dec. 2014
This lie-flat book comes with 30 designs with full-sized pattern instructions and variations too. Choose from a wide variety of styles from simple projects for beginners to more complicated designs. Useful designs include shopping totes, car caddy, organiser, changing bag, slouch bag, handbags and more. To me a tote is a typical shopping bag, so not quite clear on why it is the word used for all bags in this book. Easy to follow instructions and clear photos. Great book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dextrose recipes, 15 Dec. 2014
Sugar means extra weight and cutting it from your diet, should mean you easily lose weight. I know because I have done it myself with another famous book written by a TV personality. Not only that but I gained energy and lost the aches and pains. David has written this book to provide you with sugar free treats that use healthy alternatives. It features more than 80 illustrated recipes. However, most of them include dextrose. It is a form of glucose derived from plants and naturally occurs in honey. In fact it is sometimes known as glucose, but is more correctly D-glucose. What this book is about is replacing glucose with dextrose. You need to completely rid your body of other sugars first. I am not happy with the title of this book- The Alternative Sugar would have been less misleading. The recipes look good, easy to make and are well photographed. Yet again, they don't look particularly healthy or what would aid a slimmer's diet - coconut, cream, glucose syrup. This is a delightful cookbook, but I don't think it does what the title suggests.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy It, 12 Dec. 2014
I would give this more stars. How aptly entitled is this book? You really are going to savour not just the stitches but the designs, the whole package. The front cover gives you a good idea of what you get. Contemporary design at its best. Great colourways, fantastic workshops, simple effective design. The contents are split into Line, Contrast, Scale, Colour, Emphasis, Volume and Texture. Techniques, Workbook Pages, Templates and Resources are also included. Every craft book should look as good as this - congrats to the Lucky Spool graphic design team. Everything is clearly laid out with beautiful photography. Everything is easy-to-follow. I want to make every quilt in this book. Carolyn's work deserves this treatment. Find ideas and inspiration to make great quilts. This book is a real keeper, it's an 11 out of 10. It has to be my favourite quilt book of all time. I highly recommend you buy this, it is fantastic.
