5.0 out of 5 stars very easy to use, 28 Mar 2014
This is a new edition of a book published in 2001 that has become a classic. It offers all you need to know about printmaking techniques, including linocuts, lithography, monoprinting, wood engraving, etching, intaglio, screenprinting and more. It is a step by step directory of printmaking techniques with practical projects. The instructions are easy to follow. Themes are included such as Line and Tone and Graphic Impact to help you see the potential of the different printmaking techniques. You'll find simple to advanced techniques suitable for all skill levels. Fully illustrated throughout with a gallery of artists' work. There is also good advice on setting up a studio at home or in dedicated premises. A comprehensive guide.

4.0 out of 5 stars Get sketching, 25 Mar 2014
Sharpen your pencils, circulate and sketch. This complete guide gives you the basic skills and more to capture scenes from daily life. Includes tools and techniques, going urban, populating your world, choosing a subject. All you need to know to sketch anywhere. The book has an almost cartoon strip look to it and there is too much on each page for my taste but it certainly is packed full of useful information. You'll see different styles of work from over 40 contributing artists, yet the work is cohesive and unified. Lots of tips, techniques and different media and approaches. Many examples of work but this is not a how-to or step by step book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great simple projects with style, 24 Mar 2014
I love Zakka. It's colourful and cool, modern and stylish. These easy contemporary sewing projects are great for the home and would make perfect gifts. These gifts turn a house into a home. The 22 easy and quick to make projects come complete with easy to follow instructions and are well photographed. Templates have been provided, some need enlarging. The basics are explained so even beginners will be able to start sewing straight away. The projects are adorable - each and every one and I just LOVE this book. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys contemporary sewing.

Flowers to Knit and Crochet
Flowers to Knit and Crochet

3.0 out of 5 stars 56 flowers, 24 Mar 2014
56 flower designs divided equally between knitting and crochet patterns. Whether you knit, crochet or both, there is plenty here. The crochet section has a superb antique rose and even a potted auricula whilst the cherry blossom is beautiful in the knitting section. A double page spread shows the flowers in one go, then each flower has its own page with photographs and instructions and a full page photo too. There are, however, many books on this subject and I could not find any outstanding reason why this one should be added to the bookshelf, particularly if you only do one craft. If you take out the full photo pages, this is a very small book.

5.0 out of 5 stars probably the best pastel book, 23 Mar 2014
This review is from: Pastels Unleashed (Paperback)
This is one of the best books I have seen on using pastels. Unleash the potential of this medium with the help of this fantastic book. Margaret shows you the techniques, both dry and wet. Great step by step projects and tuition are included. I particularly like the flowers, but the landscapes, buildings and figure work are all excellent. Beautiful colour is captured with excellent photography. Margaret has a keen sense of colour, an open mind to experimentation and the ability to produce stunning work. I admire Margaret's innovative techniques. The book contains the usual information in painting books on materials and so on. Tonal value, technique, subjects, composition, perspective, mood and atmosphere, figures and animals are all discussed. There are 6 demonstrations including scenes of mountains; woods and water, Tuscany; Venice; coast and poppies. These are easy to follow. The book is illustrated throughout with outstanding work. This book is certainly worth purchasing. It is a must-have for any pastel artist.

All that dazzles is an optical illusion. Enter the world of illusionist images and encounter deception in art. Static images that intriguingly seem to move can fool us into seeing what is not there. This book explores this genre fully from ancient times to the present. It covers all the different types of optical illusion including perspective, tessellation, upside down illusions and more. You'll find work from Borromini, Dali, Escher, Picasso, Vasarely, Magritte, Bridget Riley and many others. Open your eyes to optical illusion with this fascinating book. Well illustrated.

5.0 out of 5 stars very useful, 22 Mar 2014
A beginner's guide to Japanese cord jewellery. Known as kumihimo, you'll find all the techniques of braiding included to get you started. There is even a kumihimo disc included. See how to make a bag pull, bookmark and many beautiful necklaces, often combined with beading. The instructions and photographs are clear. This is probably the best book in English on this technique showing many achievable projects.

5.0 out of 5 stars Natural Dyeing, 22 Mar 2014
This small, almost pocket-sized book is packed with information on using 50 plants to create fabulous dyed yarn or fabrics. Many of these plants have been used for over 2000 years. Jenny looks at ancient dyeing techniques and how to adapt them. You'll find all the basics of dyeing included and ideas for experimenting too. Discover how to achieve a range of beautiful natural colours. As a dyer myself, I found this book fascinating. There is an alphabetical list of plants, its uses for dyeing plus a photo of the variations in colour that can be achieved. There is a great section on woad and on madder too and even on using fungi for dyeing. There is nothing on Indigofera because this book concentrates on plants that can be grown locally. This is a very useful book for anyone interested in natural dyeing.
