… and a very reasonable price. You can hook it up via Bluetooth to just about any Bluetooth-equipped device. It's incredibly portable. It's not loud enough for, say, a party, but it's great for casual listening and background music. Fantastic gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for, 15 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I'd got past beginner level with PHP, and I was looking for a book to take me further. This is definitely it. It covers PHP basics very quickly and efficiently – great as a refresher, but I'm not sure how helpful it would be for a novice. Probably not a problem if you're familiar with JavaScript etc. The style is clean and comprehendible, the exercise files are easy to find and download (this can be a problem with other books).
It's very thick, and the text is quite small – I wound up buying the Kindle version, too, for portability and legibility. Still, in the morass of PHP books out there, this one delivers the goods.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good at the price, but…, 15 Nov. 2013

There's not a great variation in the capabilities of electric kettledom: the maximum capacity seems to be 1.7 litres, they're all cordless, etc. This one looks fine, works quickly, and is very reasonably priced. The problem is: if you pour too quickly, the spout design spills boiling water over the work surface. Can be dangerous.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a lot of alternatives, 17 Oct. 2011
This is a HD portable field monitor, and it does a terrific job. Unfortunately, the unit is supplied without a battery. This means you have to order not only a battery (I bought a Panasonic Camcorder Battery CGA-DU21, which does the job) *and* a charger for the battery (deep breath: Ex-Pro Panasonic CGA-DU06, CGA-DU06A/1B, CGA-DU07, CGA-DU07A/1B, CGA-DU07E/1B, CGA-DU12, CGA-DU12A/1B, CGA-DU14, CGA-DU14A/1B, CGA-DU14E/1B, CGA-DU21, CGA-DU21A/1B, CGA-DU21E/1B, VW-VBD070, VW-VBD120-H, VW-VBD140, VW-VBD210 Digital Camera Travel Charger, UK, USA, Canada & Europe - 2 Hour Fast Charge - for Panasonic Camcorder NV-GS150, NV-GS150B, NV-GS150EGS).

A field monitor is useless unless you can use it in the field, and few of the fields I shoot in have an electrical power point conveniently to hand.

You'll also need to buy a hot-shoe mount adaptor if you want to mount the monitor on your DSLR camera.

The instructions are written flimsily in pidgin English.

All that aside, there's not a lot of competition in the field monitor arena, and this (eventually) does the job splendidly.

The Non-Designer's Web Book: an Easy Guide to Creating, Designing, and Posting Your Own Web Site

1.0 out of 5 stars Outdated and technically vapid, 26 Jun. 2011
Don't buy this book. It's way out of date and the author doesn't know how to code a webpage. Seriously.
Robin Williams has written the excellent Non-Designer's Design Book, which I'd thoroughly recommend, but she's out of her depth here, using obsolete (pre-Adobe) Dreamweaver and other tools to create websites, without any knowledge of HTML or CSS.
This book is in drastic need of an overhaul, after which it should be shredded.

5.0 out of 5 stars Writes beautifully, 10 April 2011
I was initially dubious: the pen is quite cheap. But there aren't a lot of alternatives if you want an italic nib. This, in combination with the adapter for using any ink, is a genuine bargain. It writes smoothly and elegantly.

I don't actually have this book, but if it's like all the other Adobe Classroom In A Book editions, the exercise files are available for download. The link is usually near the end of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pen of the future, 9 Jan. 2011
This sounded like one of those gadgets that's too good to be true, like the Men From Uncle pen I was duped into buying 40 years ago, that was supposed to see through walls. In fact, it's everything I hoped it would be. I use it to record creative sessions with collaborators. Nothing is ever forgotten or lost. The notes transfer to the computer, along with the associated audio. No chance of losing valuable work with a clumsy coffee spill, or having the dog run off with it. It even makes a decent stab at transposing my appalling handwriting into editable text. I imagine it would be invaluable for students. Can't imagine how I lived without it. Oh, and it works with Macs. It does require special paper, but you can print your own if you have a laser printer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not as oversized as I'd feared, 13 Jan. 2010
Having bought high capacity batteries for other camcorders many times, and in the light of other reviews, I was expecting a huge and heavy protuberance. I was pleasantly surprised. Obviously, it's weightier and bulkier than the standard issue battery, but it really doesn't spoil the lines of the camcorder at all: it's still a compact and manageable unit. The promised battery life in the display is now over 200 minutes. It's expensive, but it works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some tips for Mac users, 10 Jan. 2010
This is an excellent hi-def camcorder, but I had a few headaches working out how to use it with a Mac and Final Cut Pro. The biggest tips are: shoot at the PF25 progressive frame setting, and import into FCP with log and transfer. Apart from that: superb, crisp pictures, easy auto mode if you don't want to fiddle, and lots of user-definable controls for more refined shooting. No more tape, no more disks. It's like living in the future.
