2.0 out of 5 stars EC Rockpalast 1978, 23 April 2015

This is a review of the quality of the DVD not of the performance. This is the 1978 Rockpalast tv studio based concert from Germany. Elvis sports a mullet and plays a Fender Jaguar not Jazzmaster! I've had copies of this show for many years in various standards of picture quality and spotting this I thought at last, an official release - it must top notch!? No such luck. This is a second or third generation copy from the original broadcast so it's fuzzy and disappointing. There is a much better version out there from a re-broadcast, that's the one to find as the actual gig is high octane EC & The A's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blu Ray Review For The Brides Of Dracula, 23 Mar. 2015

I understand why some people can get a little hot under the collar when some films are released with the incorrect ratio. And I especially understand why when it comes to the release of a Hammer film. However, this is THE BRIDES OF DRACULA people! On Blu Ray! You've got to love it. I think the picture quality is great. I've loved this film for as long as I can remember, watching it on late night telly or some dodgy VHS copy waiting for the day blu ray would be invented. Well the boffins finally caught up with my wishes and now I (and you) can enjoy afresh all those vibrant colours, detail and atmosphere that only Hammer could deliver. Okay the bottom of Sir Peter Cushing's chin is missing in one shot but I can live with that for the sheer pleasure of having THE BRIDES OF DRACULA released on Blu Ray - Hurrah!

1.0 out of 5 stars 90 Minutes Of My Life I'll Never Get Back!, 26 Jan. 2015
Re-watched this recently after having seen it many years ago thinking it was a good film. How wrong I was. Virtually everything about it is rubbish. The direction, the editing, the story and the acting are roundly poor. The score is repeated constantly in various arrangements to try to wring every bit of emotion possible but just becomes irritating. Did this film win an academy award? If it did, it must have been a sorry year for the motion picture industry. If you want something worthwhile starring Ryan O'Neal go for 'Paper Moon' and even in that his daughter is the better actor - and she was only 10 at the time! Boring!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Great 70's Movie, 14 Jan. 2015
They couldn't make a film that looks like this now. That 70's colour pallete is so attractive and unique. After a slow start the story begins building up to the 'panic' and then revolves around it's consequences. Al Pacino in a multi layered central performance is the archetypal 70's anti hero is great and KItty Winn his co star is also for most part excellent. Her character is sad and pathetic but believable. The shooting up scenes are played out as realisticly as possible and although it's tries to be hard hitting there's still something intoxicating and almost glamorous in that lifestyle. Not a film to show to impressionable early teens. By the way Pacino got off the junk, joined the NYPD and changed his name to Frank Serpico.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Big Midweek...my lost weekend!, 19 Sept. 2014
Great read so far.... Can't put it down. Really feels like you're there with Steve sharing his experiences. His youthful excitement about gettting into music, getting a bass and joining The Fall are almost tangible. Probably finish it by tomorrow. Mr Smith probably won't like it but I'll bet any money they'll be a few more albums sold after this gets into the public conciousness. Right! Where's my old Dragnet album!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hammer Blu Ray Box, 12 Sept. 2014

This is the way to get most of the restored blu ray Hammers (at the time of writing) in one go and save around £80 if you were to buy the individual uk blu ray editions. Smart presentation in book form. Hopefully they'll be a second volume compiling the outstanding and forthcoming blu ray releases. I love it.

Has this recording been remixed/remastered by Pete since the Castle communications issue from 1996? And if so is it any better?

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Stuff, 23 Jan. 2013
I'm writing this review to get some balance against the only other (at the time of writing) review. Sam Rockwell is the business. As you can tell I'm a fan but I couldn't imagine anybody but him bringing this story alive. It's got a dark comic mood that runs through it that is captivating. I don't know if these events really happened to Chuck Barris but if they did...what a life! Blu ray is blu ray what do you expect - it's clearer than dvd!!

4.0 out of 5 stars My Second Go Betweens Review, 20 Sept. 2012
This review is from: Before Hollywood (Audio CD)
On the very odd occasion you get caught off guard by an album. The Go Betweens did this to me twice - the first time was their wonderful first album Send me a lullaby (see my review 'Great Memories'). This is their best album. The awkward angles, the bits that don't flow as they should and then, three plays later, the penny drops and you want to tell all your friends how amazing the Go Betweens are. The voices that wouldn't have a cat in hells chance of getting anywhere in this sterilised, fake-soulified age but yet they mean so, so much more. Some people say it's the music here contained and not the product itself but I really miss my vinyl copy of Before Hollywood. It got lost in a house move and if I think about it too much it annoys the hell out of me. Surely that tells you what you need to know about this album.
