The Sarah Jane Adventures - Series 4 [DVD]
The Sarah Jane Adventures - Series 4 [DVD]
Dvd ~ Elisabeth Sladen

4.0 out of 5 stars Elisabeth Sladen at her best, 14 July 2012

The penultimate series of adventures contain some of the best stories in childrens' entertainment. The stand out episode has to be Death of the Doctor. With Elisabeth Sladen and Katy Manning putting in superb performances. The interplay between the two ex-Dr Who companions brought emotional tears to the eyes. Some of the best acting I have ever seen. There are not many television moments which move me like this. The series has enough scares and monsters for younger viewers and the emotion and storylines for older ones. Goodbye, Sarah Jane Smith seems sadly prescient now but the acting is impressive. Not a single story is poor and the young actors give it their all. The special feature of The Pyramids of Mars shows a younger Elisabeth Sladen in her best story from the Tom Baker era and evidences the fact that she may have aged slightly but her enthusiasm has remained as strong as ever. This is a must buy for anyone who likes Elisabeth Sladen and Dr Who in general.

3.0 out of 5 stars old avengers visited, 28 Dec. 2009

Whilst I enjoyed this flashback to an earlier time, I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. This series of The Avengers is, more or less, straight forward crime fighting. The empathy between the two main stars is evident in snatches and I can see why it was picked up for more screentime. It is interesting to see the older episodes being made available to those of us who didn't see it first time round, but anyone who expects the SF themes found in the later series will be disappointed. Honor Blackman is the best companion to Patrick Mcnee of those shown.

4.0 out of 5 stars the key to time revisited, 15 Dec. 2009

I only saw a couple of these episodes first time round so I was delighted to get this box set. I would say that they are typical fourth doctor stories with a fine mixture of humour and drama. Mary Tamm is a good companion and really should have had a second season with a screen regeneration, but her reasons for going are explained. The best episode in my opinion is THE STONES OF BLOOD closely followed by THE PIRATE PLANET; the poorest being THE POWER OF KROLL. The special features are quite good and well worth the cost of the boxset.

Moment of Destiny: One Day in Oran - An Alternative History of World War IIThis book produces a shortened WW2 with a stronger French presence. Without the British attack on the French Navy, the combined colonial powers follow a different path which results in a massively changed world.Whether Admiral Darlan would have acted this way or not I don't know but it certainly enhances the story. In our universe he was very anti-British, but this was probably the result of the attack. The story as told in this book flows believably and I would have no problem in recommending it to my friends.Anybody who is interested in alternate or parallel worlds should own this book.
