As a teacher of 11-16 year olds, I was interested when one of my students recommended this book. They raved about it. For once, I am in total agreement. I found the book had me hooked from the word go, and found it hard to put down, despite the fact that there was destined to be no happy ending.

I waited and waited for this book, and of course read all the rave reviews. Don't get me wrong, it's a good read, but for me it wasn't the amazing experience that some reviewers suggested. I love Kate Atkinson's books, particularly the Jackson Brodie ones, but I found the multi-time narrative in this one confusing and a bit irritating after a while.

This book is written in any easy style, and without a doubt most useful part of the book is the accompanying CD, which makes the meditations so simple.

I waited a long time until the paperback appeared, and was not disappointed. This was one of those subtle books that creeps up on you with its charm (and Tracey's honesty). I read it over a weekend and was almost sad to finish it.

This is not a self-help book full of jargon and gimmicks. Nor does it offer quick fixes. What it does do, however, is encourage reflection. How many of us are too caught up with stress and pressure to live for the moment and appreciate what we have in the moment? That is the key message here, and it's highly effective, encouraging a whole new mindset.

David McComb, songwriter and frontman with the Triffids, died fourteen years ago today. The availability of his work today allows fans (and those new to the Triffids) to track his development as a songwriter and performer. There is an extensive body of work to appreciate, and every album holds treasures. McComb stated that songs should contain an element of mystery, and he delivers on 'In the Pines'. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars The sprawling messy masterpiece, 17 Feb 2013

The Triffids were criminally overlooked in their day, so the Domino re-issues, with their additional material, bring them to the attention of a whole new audience. It's also a chance for die-hard fans to update from vinyl. 'The Black Swan' was intended, in the late, great David McComb's eyes, to be a 'sprawling, messy masterpiece', and it is most certainly an eclectic mix, a rich variety, the next stage in McComb's musical development after the epic 'Calenture'. Writing this review on the anniversary of David McComb's birthday is a further reminder of the talent (dare I say genius) that was lost with his untimely death.

5.0 out of 5 stars At long last..., 3 Feb 2013

Although most certainly not a conventional biography, this collection of writings focuses on David McComb and his undeniable talent. There is a huge contrast in style, varying from the personal recollections of those very close to him to highly academic analysis of his lyrics. The book is not always an easy read and gives only glimpses of David McComb the man. What it does admirably is emphasise his commitment to his art. However, as books about the Triffids and their enigmatic front man are hard to find, this is a rewarding and satisfying read.

5.0 out of 5 stars So much I didn't know, 7 Oct 2012

As an English teacher, I have to say that I found this book fascinating, and suddenly so much about spelling makes sense. What it does, however, is make me rethink how spelling should be taught so that pupils are able to make sense of it. Fascinating.
