2.0 out of 5 stars Works ok, until you need spares!, 23 Nov 2009
Like most of us, Breville was the pinnacle of Toastie makers...and so their quality must be good. But not so wih these additions to their "range".

Currently the hand-held blender works with the whisk and the blender. However, long ago the mini chopper was burred at the attachment after one stubbon crust too many (making bread-crumbs!).

So whilst the motor was upto the job, the plastic couplings were of insufficient quality!

Which lead us on to finding replacement parts, spares .. call them what you will.
It is then you find that, whilst they are still being sold in the UK, spares are - well like rocking-horse dung (to put it politely).

I should have spent the equivelant on simply a mental-shafted, hand-held blender without the assorted bits, than this junk.

If you refer to Brevilles' own UK site there is scant information about anything they do .. except a water boiler (aka kettle!). It has to be the worst site for such a large company!
Their "about us" reveals that Breville was owned by Pulse Home Products, are now owned by Alba Group (as of October 2001).

Interestingly this group alongside Breville, now includes Nicky Clarke Electric, Alba, Bush, Goodmans, Roadstar, Hinari, Betacom, Power Devil and Harvard and, under licence, Dirt Devil, Cable

2.0 out of 5 stars NOT for newbies in Drupal, 7 Jun 2009
So I bought a good book!
Everyone points to this as being a "Bible of Drupal"

Well good it may be.
May be a I fell foul of the title, referring to Development
As a developer of a [ahem] lot of years and recently dragging myself into PHP & .NET - not for want (more by business need)

Having 'consumed' many technical articles/books/manuals I can say yes it looks
like a damn good resource and one I may well come back to in time.
If I need to build modules.

But if you've just started with a xAMP install, downloaded Drupal and gone through the hoops on installing and getting to the 'welcome' you're left somewhat in the lurch.

Loads of modules
Loads of themes
It can do "anything/everything" .. but little dummies guide to how-to !?

OK - you know about taxonomys, templates, CSS etc.
Simple tasks like a homepage isn't explained/obvious.
A home page isn't one of many .. it's a one-off
everything is geared towards multiples of ans lists/modules

The books appears to be very code intensive.
A website does provide some/most of the code as a download - it's not all.
Also the list of errata appears to have been already incorporated, which is good but come form of [done/include mark would assist as there are a LOT of errata].
I generally head for before I start to read this sort of material, otherwise their typos can screw your understanding before you start.

2.0 out of 5 stars Irratating and disappointing, 7 Jun 2009
I came to this book via Wife Swap (Nexus Enthusiast) and was expecting great things. Especially given the previous write-ups.

Whilst I'm not even vagely in the field of cuckoldry I do find the story line some what thin and hardly credible.

The fact that her threatening divorce proceedings against him when shes off satisfying her needs with anything with legs (male or female) is annoying and then becomes irritating. Granted this is a fantasy book so poetic license is expected, but you still have to retain some sanity/sense about situations to make them even plausible - this does not.

He seems to spend most of his waking hours (and a good three-quarters of the book) wondering whether she is cheating. And then thinking of excuses to explain the bleeding obvious that she IS!

Now I thought the whole philosophy of this area of relationships was respect, and mutual respect at that. And that both parties enter into this behaviour jointly as consenting adults. "Dezzies" approach appears to be shag first tell later - and threaten divorce proceeding if he doesn't comply ?!

This may well fall into the area of dominatrix (or sub/dom stuff) - not Cuckold!

Even when the poor bugger is enlighten and set various tasks to proven/affirm his is complicit with her behaviour the story ends rather abruptly. Rather odd.

He worries, she fornicates, he worries more, she fornicates more, he finds out, she tells him to fall in line, he complies, she fornicates even more .. then end!

This is generally one weird book, not for the territory it's trying to cover, just from the story/plot/behvioural aspect.

I'm sorry to say this does not tick any of my boxes for fun reading. I read it
1 - to provide a review
2 - because I bought the damn thing!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best .. but not the worst!, 21 April 2009
Having never read any of Amber's material previously, this was my first dip into the writings. Whilst I agree with the previous reviewer, there is some disparity between choice of music and technology use, this doesn't detract from the story.

It is irksome that that both blokes are just excellent, if only in some areas of everyday life and naturally excel in the main thrust of this story (if you pardon the pun). That both have the gift of the gab and would charm the pants off a Nun!

The appearance of a kniving Sub/Dom element is somewhat distracting from what, I assume, is the main plot. That being the relationships within the households and between the households. And I can only assume is a laborious lead up to a comedic scene later, tho not well executed.

No sure why the previous reviewer refers to children and family?
From the very outset you get the distinct impressions they are professional couple (professional what you may well ask!) .. DINKYs or YUPPIEs.
The use of condoms [over 'The Pill'] is commendable, they're not just method of birth control, but also STI control too .. they're also available in flavours :-) !

It's and enjoyable [easy] read which on occasion did keep me into the wee hours. If I am to be believe "Cuckold" will be better, then I'm up for that too!

2.0 out of 5 stars Exciting but not believable!, 15 Feb 2009
Whilst the cover hits at the exploits of voyeurism and the excitement of a young girl (progressing to womanhood).

The book is a chaotic mixture of her describing/recounting the story/s and describing the meetings that take place between her and the person/writer collating her stories (a sort of biographer if you will).

Whilst some of the situation are exciting and sometime plausible. Most are dangerous, stupid and not at all plausible. One or two chapters make you think .. this *is* weird or make you feel a bit uncomfortable reading it, at one point I thought should it *really* have been published. It's not always continuous and has unexplained gaps between events. Sometimes bordering on a Bi Polar behaviour, she's a candidate for a 'trick-cyclist'.

I think the author was too excited about his story to actual read it in its entirety to see the gaps and quite unbelievable activities this woman gets up to. Definitely fiction!!

2.0 out of 5 stars A one-sided picture froma jaded author., 6 Mar 2008
I concurr with the previous reviewer (Not vintage Stephenson - a one-sided essay, 5 May 2003)

As a developer and reder of most things technical, my "time-off" comprises of the history of computing. As such you come across the multiple flavours of Operating System, their [documented] idiosynchrosies .. all predominantly command line (CLI) or earlier (wired/card).

As such I really am not amused by his writtings. As suggested this reads more like the rambllings of a man bitter with his experience of an Apple Mac 'totalling' his file(s) and his relucatance to entertain Micro$oft.
He then intertwines metaphors, relegion, techno-babble, corporate/business accumen and social/human activity.
All applied in a very 'odd' manner (or style).

I finished reading this book, somewhat reluctantly (I paid for it.. I'm gonna read it!) but I wouldn;t recommend this.
Its a book that doesn't address (adequately) either; social interaction, corporate cultures, computer user interaction (+HCI/GUI) nor is it a complete resume about O/S's.
It's one mans gripe about O/S's and what his ideal would be ... similarly to Steve Jobs ideal O/S is/was ... or Bill gates ideal O/S is.

As the saying goes "one mans meat, is another mans poison" but I wouldn't have written a book about it :-(

Viking at School
Viking at School

4.0 out of 5 stars A riotous book with a, 2 Sep 2002
This review is from: Viking at School (Paperback)
Sigurd (Siggy)a time-travelled viking and his wife Mrs Tibblethwaite (Mrs T), having been disqualified from anymore wrestling matches are forced to seek refuge with family/friends in Flotby. Flotby never quite recovered from the last time hey visited, now they're here to stay. The school will never be the same, especially when he reconstructs a long boat in a classroom, whilst one of the teachers is sleeping.

I read this to our boys and using Siggys Viking english (coats = goats, sheets = sheep etc. ) the description some of the situations and names are hilarious. We were all in fits when I had to read (make the sound) of a large piggy being assaulted by nosepicker (Sigurds [broad]sword).

All in all a very good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Synopsis of www - how, why and where it is heading, 6 Mar 2000
An excellent read. As many have commented, not actually a techie book (per se) but about a technical subject. The author describes the multiple incarnations and the reasoning behind it. He then goes on to describw how he trys to promote it, use the InterNet (NOT the Web!)

If you're old enough there are reference to machines & formats that will allow you to reminisce :) And certainly dipicts a well known scene of multiple O/S with multiple Formats for multiple users.... HTML or no HTML - this will still remain.

The latter 2-3 chapters do wander in to the mid-to-distant future and at the very end religious (very worrying - technology v theology).

On the whole easily worth the money. Couldn't put it down, not bad for a non-manual book :)
