The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine
The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine
by Ilan Pappé
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.74

5.0 out of 5 stars like some latter-day Lady Macbeth, 12 Jan. 2015
A bold and powerful account of how the very formation of the State of Israel is founded on racism , massacre, and progressive ethnic cleansing of large areas of Palestine It is part of a body of powerful writing, which exposes the way in which Zionism is a failed experiment,in Neo Facism which whilst it can murder its way into becoming a state. However, like some latter-day Lady Macbeth, Israel will never be able to wash the blood stains from its hands whilst powerful lucid and well researched accounts such as Pappe's writings are read.
If you want to know about the events of 1947-8 in which the State of Israel came into existence and on the course upon which it has set itself for the last 65 years .. then look no further

5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary insightful and lucid account of the way in which ..., 12 Jan. 2015
Extraordinary insightful and lucid account of the way in which Israel controls and manipulates the Western world in order to continue it's racism and colonialism in Palestine, whist simultaneously sustaining the proposition that it is under existential threat.. as a means of rationalising the necessity for it's apartheidism

I'm not smart enough to describe this music.. but I like the ambience of it it's a great listen.. great depth and resonance and more substance than a lot of electronic noodling that I've heard..

5.0 out of 5 stars Forgotten how much I loved this, 16 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Trying to get some work done on the laptop.. on a cold Sunday afternoon... and slipped this slinky, funky, groovy, sinuous gem on .. My solar plexus is reverberating along nicely to the insidious thudding bass.. while the loops and swoops of the melody hover in the air around my head

5.0 out of 5 stars could be my favourite album of all time, 27 Nov. 2013
This review is from: The Rising (Audio CD)
Every song on this has depth , maturity, passion , melody , and rock sensibility.. If there is a more astute artist around with greater compassion, integrity and passion I'd like to hear them.. The whole Springsteen cannon is great .. but this could be the most perfected and finely honed of them all.

2.0 out of 5 stars outakes for a reason, 8 May 2012
This review is from: The Promise (Audio CD)
Is it just me .. but I can't get into this at all.. it seems like a long sequence of listening to a noble attempt to (re) create some great and much loved songs... and making a right old fist of it in the process.. Love and cherish Darkness, and steer clear of this.. would be my take. Buying this leaves you feeling a bit cheapened and slightly ripped off.. I really wish I had resisted.

1.0 out of 5 stars imagine useless and go backwards, 8 May 2012

What a waste of paper this is.. Shows you the shape of the area from outer space .. but no use whatsoever for anything practical..

5.0 out of 5 stars a critical book, 10 Feb. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I recently met Barbrook at an event and he handed me a card promoting this book .. He had been playing and discussing a war /strategy game which linked into Guy de Bord which looked interesting , but as I had missed the begining so it was a bit indecipherable. Nevertheless now having read the book it is clear that he is a lucid thinker and his application of cybernetics and the pre conditions for the computer age made facinating reading .. The way in which he identifies how the role of the cold war was underplayed in the development of 50's and 60's western culture was eye opener .
He is imaginative in the way that he uses a leftist perpective to link various themes together to help describe and analyse the IT age that now dominates modern society and culture. Indeed there is a curious resonance in buying and then reviewing the book on Amazon! He develops a range of new non-ideological horizons for us to consider.. Perhaps I expected the book to explore some of this links into psychological systems theory (Bateson) but it seemed to be more sociologically, culturally and politically based
Nevertheless as someone who is not immersed in political science academia I found this to be an accessible , intelligent, stimulating and important book. I think I understood most of it and the impact of having read it will stay with me for a long time.

Bicycle Diaries
Bicycle Diaries

3.0 out of 5 stars not so much about cycling but more about David Byrnes musings, 10 Feb. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Bicycle Diaries (Hardcover)
A bit of a disappointment .. Not too much about cycling per-se but more about some of his musing about the politics of various places .. reads a bit moodily His treatise on the Phillipines is unexciting writing As a non mechanical cyclist there is a a place for a book about inner thoughts as well as external experiences gained through pedalling through the environment .. I agree with the central premise that cycling is a great way of seeing a city and finding your way around and meeting people.. I would have liked to have seen more detail re his sojurn around Istanbul for instance... This unfortunately is neither an autobiography or a travel journal or a treatise and yet it kind of meanders around all of them in a spontaneous (ill planned?) way If it is psycho-geography then in my view there is neither enough psycholgy nor indeed enough geography either
.. Not the worst book written by any means.. however not the best either

5.0 out of 5 stars the best klezmer music I've heard, 9 Sept. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This an absolute gem of an album. There are a myriad of moments when the different instruments all swoop together to throw your senses up in the air. There is a wonderful diversity of moods. and some of the most bizarre liner notes to cap it all off. This a great cd to give you a life enhancing sense of elation.. I wouldn't mind but I think it is only semi seriously meant half the time. I've had it on my shelves for a long time and it's been a joy to get it back out and give myself a blast from it.. It's only when I've checked on Amazon for some of Frank's other stuff that I've realised that no-one has commented on it .. so here goes
