5.0 out of 5 stars A triumph over adversity, 14 April 2012

This review is from: Night In The Ruts (Audio CD)
Considering the extra-curricular activities of the band and, the fact that some band-members were barely functioning, this is a cracking, riffing album.

It starts with 'No surprize', which is as good as any rocker that Aerosmith ever wrote and performed, and ends with 'Mia', a ballad in the mould of 'Dream on'. In between, the raw riffs hit you like the Rolling Stones on '11'.

The only down-side is the album cover which depicts the band-members as miners in a grey environment and is very bizarre (even the iconic winged logo has disappeared).

For discussion, here are my favourite Aerosmith albums in the 'bad-old-days' era (best first) :

1) 'Live bootleg'
2) 'Rocks'
3) 'Toys in the attic'
4) 'Get your wings'
5) 'Aerosmith'
6) 'Draw the line'
7) 'Night in the ruts'

5.0 out of 5 stars In my opinion, his best studio album, 7 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Defender (Audio CD)
I bought 'Live in Europe' in 2002 and I bought 'Defender' in late 2011 which, in my opinion, is his best work.

It rocks from start to finish with the highlights being 'Road to Hell', with its Stones-like riff, and the R & B soaked bonus track, 'Seems to me'. 'Failsafe Day' is another raw rocker and the production throughout is first-class, with prominent bass and drums.

Highly recommended, if you love raw and hard rock'n'roll Blues.

Does the Noise in My Head Bother You?: The Autobiography
Does the Noise in My Head Bother You?: The Autobiography

5.0 out of 5 stars A charismatic and iconic rock legend and human being, 29 Mar 2012
Steven Tyler is a unique performer and individual, and I read this autobiography in one day. It was fascinating, outrageous, decadent and perceptive and his quirky personality and razor-sharp brain were much in evidence. There were parts of his dialogue that were incomprehensible to me, but that is the nature of the man (it did not ruin the read). He, like a lot of us, is a complex character where his weaknesses for addiction are simply matched by his determination to overcome ANY obstacle that addiction presents (heroin, Hepatitis 'C', feet issues and painkiller addiction etc).

What a life he has enjoyed and endured.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rory rocking, 16 Mar 2012

This is a hard-rocking album, epitomised by the aural assault of opener 'Big guns', the groove boogie of 'Double vision' (very catchy) and a searing guitar solo on 'Signals'.

Highly recommended.

'Follow me' epitomises the storming guitar assault of this 70s offering and it is relentless throughout.

One of his best albums, alongside 'Calling card' and 'Irish Tour'.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Van Roth, 11 Feb 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
All great bands demonstrate a 'synergistic' effect whereby the whole > sum of the parts.

Roth was made for Van Halen ; Wolfgang has inherited his dad's musicianship and the under-rated Alex likes to batter his tubs. Eddie was a guitar pioneer and legend, as everyone knows.

Not going to highlight individual tracks, but I spent a Saturday morning like this back in 1979 when I (belatedly) bought Van Halen 1.

Buy it for a wall of beautiful sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sad farewell from 'The Master', 30 Jan 2012

This is worth buying just for the epic 10 minutes slow Blues of 'I love you more than you'll ever know'.

The remainder of the album is raw, gritty, hard-hitting Blues that will pour your soul onto your lounge carpet.

A must for any lover of Hard rock and Blues.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding introduction to Geology, 15 Jan 2012

This book is a textbook 'Tour de force'.

Having gained a 'B' in Geography 'O' level in 1980, I decided recently to learn more Geology - or Earth Science - and this book explains concepts and the numerous geological definitions with great clarity. It is also stimulating and absorbing, as the author is obviously passionate about his subject, and very well planned and structured.

Living in Cardiff, I can also use the National Museum's 'Rocks & Minerals' section which really makes the book come alive.

Highly recommended text, worth a purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best heavy metal band ... ever !, 21 Dec 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Obsession (Audio CD)
It's taken me since 1978 to work this one out, but, after listening to 'Obsession' today, I conclude that UFO are the greatest Metal band. From the anthemic 'Only you can rock me' through the beautiful 'Looking out for No.1' to the atmospheric 'One more for the rodeo' and the moving 'Born to lose', this is another classic album from UFO.

They are the Abba of Heavy metal in that, over decades, they churned out so many classics from 'Rock bottom' to 'Self-made man'.

The hard-hitting drums of Andy Parker ; the immaculate and soulful voice of Phil Mogg ; the pounding of bassist Pete Way ; the keyboard touch of Paul Raymond (or Neil Carter) ; the guitar mastery of Schenker / 'Tonka' Chapman / Vinnie Moore.

There is a massive synergistic effect in play within UFO.

They are LEGENDS.
