Price: £4.49

3.0 out of 5 stars Neville who/, 22 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Generally good, spoilt by Deighton confusing Neville Chamberlain with Joseph or Austin (uncle and cousin), sign of a bit of sloppy research.

2.0 out of 5 stars A novel from 1968, 22 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Nowhere in the Kindle edition does it mention that this book was written in 1968 , i was at school in Cornwall at the time, and it is interesting to contrast this novel with , say, a Booth (cooper & Fry) novel. The scant 'police procedural' aspect, no DNA, ridiculous SOCO work and an apparent lack of radios make it seem very quaint.
There are also so many signs of how 'political correctness' has changed Britain , the drinking, smoking a pipe ( when did i last see a man with a pipe?) and of course the attitudes to morals., i can't imagine Sgt. Fry using the word 'queer'.
A bit of a historical novel then.

1.0 out of 5 stars good., 15 Jan. 2015
No mention of Britain's WWIII resistance organisation. Still secret, good.

Littlejohn's Lost World
Price: £4.35

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, though looking back can be painful as well., 9 Jun. 2014
I'm a few years older than Richard but this book captures a time very well, a good book to have alongside the histories by Kynaston.
A great cover, loved the Rover P4, though we had a P3 and then a Humber. That boy isn't cleaning his Clarke's shoes enough.

A complete maths course up to such a level for so very little money, we do truly live in a wonderful age.
Just assimilate it as you go through it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An important book, i wish politicians would read it, 21 Feb. 2014
I am currently struggling to read 'BOSNA kratka povijest', the book in translation (with a dictionary) here in Bosnia, unfortunately it is not made fore Kindle, yet.
I really wish the stupidly divided Bosnian school system had this unified history and not their ethnic mythologizied 'history'.

5.0 out of 5 stars The meaning of love., 6 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Illyrian Spring (Kindle Edition)
As someone who lives in modern Dalmatia I was attracted to this title, when I read it I got a glimpse of places I know well as they were in the latter 1930s but the best thing about this book is its treatment of degrees of love without the modern obsession sex, i re-read the book in an analytic way and found great help from it.

Then We Die (An Inspector Carlyle Novel Book 4)
Then We Die (An Inspector Carlyle Novel Book 4)
Price: £2.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Carlyle bumbles on, 27 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I really like the style of writing but this 5th novel strains my belief too much.
Without a spoiler I must say that Carlyle would really find himself inside a huge team and i'm sure at one point the Home secretary would be calling a COBRa meeting.
At least it shows Mossad terrorism as other cities like Beirut experience it.

1.0 out of 5 stars destroyed suspension of disbelief, 26 Feb. 2012

Sometimes one reads a book and something, often a small but vital detail, breaks the fiction and spoils the whole thing. (A story spoiler follows, you may wish to look away). The 'hero' is put into a difficult situation, an automatic pistol is thrust into his hand and he is told to shoot a bound prisoner, it's a test of loyalty. He fires repeatedly and then realises the gun fires blanks , then a few seconds later it fires a live round (bullet round).
Stephen Leather knows nothing about pistols or has not researched them enough, an automatic will only fire more than one blank round if the barrel is constricted enough to let the recoil work, or with a very weak special spring, this is how prop guns work .The pistol then couldn't fire bulleted round.
Totally spoilt it.
