4.0 out of 5 stars Just What I wanted, 24 Oct. 2010
This is a reproduction of the wartime publication. It is most interesting and just what I wanted.

The only small improvement that I think would have been helpful is a couple of pages in a prefix which gave hints and tips on adapting the recipes to our more affluent times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Judge Dee in Cracking Form, 13 Mar. 2002
Judge Dee is a detective in ancient China and as a magistrate usually has several crimes on the go at once. This book deals with several tricky crimes he gets lumbered with by a neighbouring magistrate. This is van Gulick at his best and thoroughly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Judge Dee Short Stories, 13 Mar. 2002
This book contains short stories dealing with individual crimes solved by Judge Dee. The novels usually deal with several crimes that have to be solved. This means that people who have read the novels may not find the short stories as sarisfying as the excellent novels. I enjoyed them and would recommend the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Judge Dee in Love, 13 Mar. 2002
This is one of the best Judge Dee books. He is investigating a particularly dificult murder and is in some ways distracted by a growing relationship with a married woman. The Judge Dee books are a delight for their different slant on the detective novel and for their authentic Chinese flavour. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Woderful Chinese Detective Story, 13 Mar. 2002
This is the culminationation of Mr van Gulick's Judge Dee books which are set in ancient China. It is Judge Dee's Last case and neatly ties up all the loose ends relating to the characters common to the series. This does not detract from the book and it is a pity that Mr van Gulick did not write more books in a similar vein or write a different series about the life of Judge Dee after he became a minister of state. All Mr van Gulick books are a most entertaining read and I can thoroughly recommend them.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read., 13 Mar. 2002
I read this book many years ago and have reread it many times since. Like all the Judge Dee books by Mr van Gulick it is a most entertaining delight. Unlike some other crime fiction authors each of his books tells a different story and this one is one of the few new books I have bought.
