Zona: A Book about a Film about a Journey to a Room
Zona: A Book about a Film about a Journey to a Room
by Geoff Dyer
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.98

3.0 out of 5 stars where the action is not very action like, slow in other words, 23 July 2016
Zona is a book about a famous Tarkovsky film called Stalker, where the action is not very action like, slow in other words. Dyer is funny about these sorts of films a few times even not long in, and proceeds to describe what happens in Stalker in a way that's good at first if you're in a quietly receptive mood. However as soon as your mood starts to wane a bit so does the book as its a bit slow itself. Then it palls so much what your reading begins to blur and confuse. It just doesn't grab your attention enough in the way that many current things don't either.

2.0 out of 5 stars went under my head, 20 July 2016
I watched the Sopranos twice and wondered what all the fuss was about - I just thought it was dull. If this was the start of new drama on T.V then if any of it is like this then I'm not bothered. Maybe it all just went under my head in the end.

The News: A User's Manual
The News: A User's Manual
by Alain de Botton
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £1.76

3.0 out of 5 stars De Botton should have left the news alone as a subject, 20 July 2016
The News A User's Manual is not de Botton's best book by a long shot, maybe the problem being that the news isn't a subject that lends itself particularly to philosophical inquiry. You could parody the news in fact by saying its always the same thing with different details - today there's a war somewhere in the world, one MP slagged off another MP and calls for his resignation or some other banal tittle-tattle, some people got murdered, some workers got laid of somewhere - its the same stuff endlessly in a way. People are too entranced by it and I wish De Botton hadn't thrown himself into the fray on this one even if he had intentions of news being better produced. He has some good ideas on it but its not that exciting in the end.

Who in hell reads a whole Simon Schama book ? - he's just too comprehensive in the end, such that its phenomenally boring. Just read the preface - this one was amazing, genius even.

Tristram Shandy (Wordsworth Classics)
Tristram Shandy (Wordsworth Classics)
by Laurence Sterne
Edition: Paperback
Price: £1.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Some arty people love the idea of a modern before modern cultural thing ..., 20 July 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I suppose this is clever stuff because it just wiggles and jiggles from this to that in a way that is almost entirely modern when the novel is in fact from the late eighteenth century. Some arty people love the idea of a modern before modern cultural thing and this is an example of such - El Greco also prefigured Picasso's idea of space as another example. However clever as it is it seems on initial reading to be just cleverness and nothing more. but some people love that kind of crap

Astrology for the Soul (Bantam Classics)
Astrology for the Soul (Bantam Classics)

5.0 out of 5 stars the soul's journey, 20 July 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Contrary to what scientific types might think about astrology it often seems in the contemporary debate about the subject, things that seem to be small pack a large punch in terms of new meaning - like chiron which seems to be very significant now or about the moon's nodes which is the subject of this book. Its amazing how much can be gleaned from a proper investigation into this aspect and Jan Spiller really does it justice showing us how the soul's journey is laid out in each sign. brilliant

4.0 out of 5 stars pretty good if not, 20 July 2016
This review is from: African Art in Detail (Hardcover)
Because this is not a big book it can't really be said to be in any way comprehensive about African art. It does however provide a taster for anybody who is interested and wants to know more. pretty good if not brilliant

Little Giant Encyclopedia: Numerology
Little Giant Encyclopedia: Numerology
by Daniel Heydon
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars has some added extras, 20 July 2016

This numerology book has some great aspects to it - namely that it features a breakdown in numerological terms of every day of the month, and then features every day of the year too - phew! At the end of the book it also has a feature on karmic numbers or the numbers 13, 14, 16 , 19, of which I found 19 to be particularly relevant to me. better than most perhaps on this subject
