A Lovely book you will never get tired of going back to as the late great Ian Nairn gives his erudite and quirky views on places and buildings in London some now long demolished, but still lovely to read about from the perspective of this great and learned man.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best British Gangster Movie since Long Good Friday, 23 Jun. 2015

This review is from: Shiner [DVD] [2001] (DVD)
A very enjoyable film Michael Caine plays the character Billy Shiner superbly, but unlike Harold Shand in Long Good Friday (Surely the greatest ever British Gangster Movie) Billy Shiner lacks the like-ability factor which is probably the major flaw of this otherwise excellent very memorable film with an outstanding cast. I saw the film first of all on The London Live Freeview TV channel ,and liked the film so much I bought the DVD so as to watch the extra features. I sometimes enjoy watching how a film was made more than the film itself, but this film despite the lead character not being a particularly admirable character the film holds up very well and keeps you gripped, and the making of featurette make buying the DVD well worth the couple of quid I bought mine for. I would say that this film is probably my next favourite British gangster movie next to the incomparably brilliant Long Good Friday.

5.0 out of 5 stars such a fun series and the memories flood back, 16 Jun. 2015
I really enjoyed watching these programmes many of which I saw when they were first shown. kept seeing actors I completely forgotten about who were regulars in TV shows of the time. Lewis Jones born 1923 in Wales has really got my curiosity going there's not much about him on the net and the IMBD site only gives his birth date I wonder can he possibly still be alive ? He was brilliant in General Hospital such a fascinating kindly curmudgeonly character, but he did look old for his age. Windsor Davies makes an appearance as a cheeky old man in danger of marrying a young floozy who turns out to be a good egg and is really funny,The lovely Liz Genhardt who so tragicaly died from botched Chemo treatment for breast cancer aged just 51 famous from "Please Sir" has a great storyline as a patient starving herself to get her uncaring man back. Joanna Lumley looks absolutely stunning. Capper the cheeky chappie ginger haired porter and Bruce Forsythe lookalike is brilliant. Alas their are many missing episodes, but several storlines conclude satifactorily. Its a pity Network couldn't have produced a booklet about the series perhaps with abbreviated storylines for the missing episodes and some biographical details for the actors in the show. Some video interviews or commentaries by surviving cast and crew would have been nice. Whatever its lovely to have this boxset. Volume 2 is two years behind schedule for release so I do hope Network will release volume 2 as soon as possible as with the London Bridge series I am desperate to be able to see it.

Picture and sound quality is perfectly fine for TV of this vintage and I must admit to rather preferring the black and white telecine episodes as film has much more vibrancy about it than video of the period.

No matter what age you are if you are a fan of medical dramas like Holby City,Casualty,Doctors etc etc I feel certain you will enjoy watching this glimpse at this early attempt at the genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Sherlock Holmes well done BFI, 29 May 2015
This review is from: Sherlock Holmes (4-DVD SET) (DVD)
I just got my boxset in the post today and it absolutely superb. The interview with Douglas is wonderful I have never met him,but its obvious he is such a lovely man who had to fight his corner to get these definitive Sherlock Holmes dramatisations made as faithfully as they were when confronted with sub standard scripts written by people who knew nothing of the subject. He had to re-write the scripts himself to bring them up to standard, and after 12 episodes and after being confronted with much reduced rehearsal times for series 2 he felt too exhausted by the process to do it,and that is how the very much inferior replacement to him Peter Cushing was chosen. It needs no saying, but Nigel Stock was perfect as Watson he played Watson so very real to character A man not stupid, but of normal mortal wise intelligence a contrast to the genius of Holmes, and gentle, brave, ladies man and thoroughly loyal cove he was brilliant. Wilmer is in my humble opinion the only portrayer of Sherlock Holmes worth comparing to the late great Jeremy Brett, though I do rather like Tom Baker's cerebral, but much maligned portrayal of Holmes in the 1982 BBC Television Hound. If you like the pure drop then Douglas Wilmer is probably your definitive Holmes he plays the part with sheer knowingness and genius. If you call yourself a Sherlock Holmes Fan you must buy this DVD and make sure it is the BFI release and not the earlier US Region one BBC release which contains none of the restoration and extras The Restorative Work to improve sound and picture as much is as possible given budget limitations,The interview with Douglas Wilmer about his portrayal of Holmes and his TV career,The several commentaries, the beautiful informative booklet etc etc this beautiful definitive DVD boxset include.

Sherlockianly yours

Classic Poe: Unabridged (Commuter's Library)

1.0 out of 5 stars One Star, 6 April 2015

I collect poetry and spoken word recordings in all the formats from 78rpm record to the latest digital recordings and have probably have most of the great sound recordings of Poe's poetry in my collection this Boring readings by a very uninspired inappropriate English reader is probably the worst it has all the expression of a reading of the phone book, and as the reader is English his accent is completely wrong for Poe who was American. The reader has apparently won awards for his voice work, but based upon this I cannot award him anything more than a wooden spoon.

Complete quackery I am afraid all this product contains is talcum power and zinc powder and is no cure for ear infections, actually its more likely to clog the dogs ears up. If you dog has an ear infection get proper advice from a vet and use proper medicated ear drops this I am sorry to say is the only real solution to the problem. Do not believe the exaggerated claims for this overpriced talcum power, this product is "Snake Oil" for dogs, pure quackery I am afraid to say.
