2.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book if you are intersted in flying and aeroplanes., 5 Mar 2014

This review is from: The Beauty Chorus (Kindle Edition)
I found this book a poor read - it was badly researched and gave little information about the ATA work delivering planes to squadrons during WW II. It is really a Mills and Boon novel with a very small amount of detail about flying.
There are some glaring mistakes eg mentioning visiting US bases in Britain before Pearl Harbour. The US airforce only got to Britain in 1942 and bases were not really up and running until 1943. The whole aspect of living in wartime Britain in 1941 does not ring true.
Overall very disappointing for anyone wanting an interesting novel about ATA work inwartime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good combination of story and technical details., 1 Sep 2013

This review is from: Wings Over Summer (Kindle Edition)
This book was an excellent read - it is a fast paced story with plenty of technical detail but an overriding sense of the terrible grind of combat for RAF pilots involved in the air war in 1940.
The story is gripping and carries you along with the breakneck speed of the relentless attack on Britain by the German airforce. This book is one of the best novels about air warfare that I have read - easily comparable to ' A piece of cake ' by Derek Robinson.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gives some answers to this unfortunate operation in WW2, 8 Nov 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Allies at Dieppe (Kindle Edition)
This is a well researched book that uses information gleaned from soldiers who took part in the operation. It mostly gives a comprehensive description of the successful Commando operation to silence a gun battery near Dieppe but also gives excellent answers for the reasons for the main 'raid in force' of Dieppe in 1942 being carried out, and its failure.

The Knights Templar (Pocket Essentials)
The Knights Templar (Pocket Essentials)
Price: 2.09

4.0 out of 5 stars Concise; full of useful information, 8 Nov 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An excellent introduction to the subject. Gives plenty of background information about the Crusader period of the 12th and 13th century and puts the templars into context. The book highlights the lack of written period documents about the templars but doesn't put forward any silly conjecture.

5.0 out of 5 stars interesting USA history, 25 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An excellent history of SW USA covering mostly conflict with the Comanche tribe. Contains interesting facts about Indian life and the settlement of SW of the USA. I had only heard of Colonel Custer and the war with the Sioux tribe but this is equally fascinating. Gives a lot of biographical detail of Indians, US army and white settlers. Definitely recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars some good entertaining westerns, 21 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This was definitely a good buy- seven DVD's for 10.Most are well acted with interesting and entertaining stories. Destry Rides Again and Winchester 73 are probably the best with Shenandoah being the weakest as it is rather mawkish ( but redeems itself with some good action). Rock Hudson turns up several times- sometimes as an Indian ( he doesn't seem a very good actor). Overall the set was enjoyable.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rather dated, 1 Feb 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Kiss Me Deadly [DVD] (DVD)
Perhaps I was expecting too much from this film because it was directed by Robert Aldrich but it seemed very dated and not particularly gripping. I suppose it kept too truly to Mickey Spillane's text as the protagonist seems to spend much time groping women resulting in the story did not holding together well. The crime was solved by Mike Hammer in a slapdash and not very believable manner and I was left surprised that he triumphed in the end.A rather disappointing 1950's film.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well made period crime DVD, 1 Feb 2012

I enjoyed this DVD- it told the story of a planned robbery well with plenty of detailed description of the characters.Although it is set in the 1950's and is enjoyable for the period detail, I can imagine a cast of modern characters carrying out the same type of robbery (probably with more violence). All together a good 90 minutes of entertainment.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent film., 24 Oct 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this film after hearing an afternoon play on BBC radio 4 on the difficulties and foibles of Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler when cooperating to write the screenplay (well worth listening to). The film exceeded my expectations and is a superb piece of period film noir. I had only seen Barbara Stanwyck in Western films and she was outstanding in this- Fred McMurray gave an excellent performance.Even after the difficulties between Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler, the screenplay produced a supremely watchable film with very atmospheric photography.

An interesting and well acted film made to boost morale in WWII. It portrays the Nazi pilot as suitably perfidious, the Italian as bumblingly decent and the allies(Americans, British and French) as cooperative and patriotic. The action scenes are well filmed and exciting. Overall well worth watching.
